Are corporations sociopathic?

Is the corporation a sociopath writ large? The makers of the documentary The Corporation certainly think so. Let's make a quick diagnosis. Does the corporation have a flexible identity? Yes, corporations spend untold millions on P.R. alone, crafting whatever image is required to dupe the public into thinking they’re ‘nice.’ Does the corporation love to play games? Yes, corporations exist to play the game of ‘let’s make as much money as we can.’ Ruthlessness is very often another name of for that same game. Does the corporation sometimes behave irresponsibly? Yup, when it pollutes to cut costs without regard for any potential harm it might bring, for instance. Does the corporation respect social and moral norms? Nope, the corporation can and many times does do whatever is necessary to make a profit, and paying hefty fines is often seen as just the price of doing business. Most importantly, does the corporation lack a conscience? Yes, corporations not only lack conscience, but often never admit to any ‘wrong doing’ whatsoever, even when they are found guilty by a court of law.

Okay, so maybe the corporation is sociopathic in nature. BUT… as always things are more complicated than moralistic anti-corporate anti-globalization anti-western westerners believe. The corporation provides jobs for billions of people all over the world who only want to take care of their families and themselves in peace. Even sweatshops provide employment in impoverished locales where there would otherwise be none. The corporation has played a pivotal role in creating a dominant western economy, one that has been an engine for prosperity for the middle as well as the upper classes and the envy of the world. And the corporation has been a leveler of the playing field, allowing some from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to rise through the ranks to become leaders. The corporation has spread invention, spurred innovation and expanded industry all over the globe, for worse yes, but also for better.

Are corporations evil? Are sociopaths? Or does the question itself arise from a naïve and simplistic mindset to begin with?

  1. Sociopathy does not automatically make something evil; it just depends how well the game meshes with 'greatest happiness to the greatest number.' A conscience or sense of justice can be a great impediment in doing the hard, right thing. I don't think corporations are the best or the worst. Individual sociopath's usefulness derives from where they are in the system.

    1. This is an argument for the REGULATION of the free market. This is why we liberals don't believe everything - Social Security, health care, and other social programs - should just be left up to the free market. Nobody is saying corporations are not beneficial to society. Maybe you are the one that is oversimplifying this issue? If someone says something negative about something, why do some have to take it to the other extreme? I've seen this film, and it's just making a simple analogy. I didn't get that it was saying we should obliterate all corporations from the face of the earth and start anew - we (or rather the government that we elect) should just keep a watchful eye over them.

Really? I thought a conscience would make it easier to do the 'hard, right thing'.

    2. "A conscience or sense of justice can be a great impediment in doing the hard, right thing." That's completely right! For example, extremist suicide bombers believe it is 'the right thing' to blow themselves up and kill and maim as many random others as they can. This is the typical scenario where conscience (due to it's nature of being empathy and an emotional connection with others as well as at a deeper level, the unity of all things) can really kick up a fuss and inconveniently get in the way, sometimes to the point of the person having a nervous breakdown. How much of an impediment depends very much on how much of a conscience the person has in the first place. Some people have no conscience; in that case ‘doing the right thing’ is incredibly easy, in fact there’s nothing there to stop it.

  3. Corporations are sociopaths, this is absolutely true. Like sociopaths, they're not evil. They're not good either. They're neutral. They could be either, given the opportunity. It's why capitalism works. Real profit is a better test of survival then subjective human judgment.

  5. I don't think it's comprehensible to believe that an institution like the corporation is sociopathic, unmoored from any condemnation of the human beings who comprise it and drive its existence.

Would we say that a neighbourhood association is sociopathic, or a labour union, or a political party, or a charity event that requires payment for admission, or a child with a lemonade stand who is selfishly only interested in paying customers?

What about a group of survivors from an aeroplane crash in the Himalayas, once their stomachs start growling and they turn their eyes as one man upon the fattie in the group?

Would we say that a computer operating system is sociopathic? It's certainly pretty god-damned antisocial and self-only interested.

Which provokes another question: what gave birth to these things?

Are they all malignant memes perpetrated by the international guild of sociopaths, or are they the natural consequences of evolving social dynamics among higher primates?

    http://www.rifters.com/real/shorts/VampireDomestication.pdf

"... sociopaths are among the most successful players in business, industry, and medicine; ruthless pragmatism, lack of conscience, and freedom from fuzzy touchy-feely emotions like empathy are prerequisites of success in today's corporate environment. In fact, corporations themselves, as legal entities, meet all the diagnostic criteria for clinical sociopathy...."

  7. If you hold to a behaviourist view of psychology, then we cannot attach moral statements to corporations as though they were 'qualities' inherent to what it is to be 'corporate'. However, the label 'sociopathic' given it's defintion may be applied to the nature of 'corporation' if its behavioural reality concurs with the accepted definiton- which it does. The lack of emotional awareness and empathy evidenced by corporate behaviour in relation to the effect of corporate behaviour and the response to said effects by a population endorses this view. For example, the action of Oil corporations in the Niger Delta maybe described as Sociopathic.

  8. Not good or bad... but sociopaths are selfish. All for self. In addition, there is no such thing as neutral. If you sit on the fence, you are effectively backing whoever is in charge.

  9. The idea that corporations created millions of jobs is ridiculous, they didn't create millions of jobs, they created a system where millions of jobs were needed because of taxes, property grabs, poor land management for farming, rents and mortgages, and then centralized the jobs so that people moved off the farm into the cities, thus creating a kind of prison system where the people were first dependent on the corporations to pay for what the corporations and politicians arranged and it is all based on an antisocial/sociopaths mantra, that of screw everyone, I'm taking 80@ of the wealth and everyone is fodder for my needs and can get stuffed. That is a sociopath and it's also a corporation, in fact, a lone sociopath is fairly easy to control, a large corporation is nearly impossible to control, and if they put out drugs, booze, or cigarettes that are the cause of proven harm, and fined, they merely raise prices and the people who buy their junk pay their fine essentially. Imagine a world of no mortgagess or rents or taxes on property, a garden at each location or a community run dairy, farm, and so forth? Impossilbe some say, no, but it will come to that or we will become more and more ill, physically which leads to mental illness and rarely the other way around. We put the cart before the horse as a matter of illogical practice, failing to see the hellhole we've allowed sociopath's mantra via corporate policy to heap upon us, via toxic water, toxic air, toxic food, toxic workplaces, and toxic socio/economic practices. Medicine is a catastrophe, chemicals are making our blood and brain toxic, TV, computers and radio are using up what few brain cells we have left, and we call that progress and freedom. It's pure BS and those who offer a rational reason for the way things are, are likely to say it was worse many years ago, more brutality, shorter lives, and killings whenever someone took a notion to kill, but the fact is, that was rare, only the claims of such a world were not rare, but loved to be written about or talked over and expanded upon until one woud think the best course would be to not be born to start with. Remove the Sociopath's Mantra/Corporate Policy (one of the same), replace it not with bleeding heart ideas, they're stupid and nonworkable to start with, but with organic practices and not the linear nonsense that keeps us hopping to nowhare.

  10. "the corporation has been a leveler of the playing field, allowing some from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to rise through the ranks to become leaders"

That is not leveling the playing field. That's equal opportunity gangsterism. True field leveling is where everyone is a leader or, if you prefer, where no one is.

By that logic, slaves should have been grateful to be slaves and proud to be part of a system that brought "prosperity" to the world. Not that THEY got to partake of it, and if they were very GOOD slaves and worked hard they might someday earn their freedom and become slave OWNERS too...

    Sickening...

  12. So corporations act in ways that could be described as sociopathic. Why?
Are there corporations that don't act so? I might point to corporations with strong leaders e.g. Apple.
How do corporations make decisions that result in sociopathic behaviors, given that they are entirely composed of human decision makers that for the most part will be acting in "moral" ways away from the office?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are absolutely certain that decision-making WITHIN the office is made on a moral basis, though? Steinbeck described the banks of the 1920s collectively as The Monster - staffed by human beings, yes, but not controlled by them. With that being the case, how ARE decisions made by corporations, if not from a human (and therefore purportedly moral) foundation?

"I don't think the problem lies in the lack of identifying with self, but in the need to VALIDATE ones self. Socios do not need validation"

Hi. I want very much to understand these two . I am borderline and also narcissistic but not a fulll blown narcissist, although i can be vengeful and set on revenge. (I THINK it stems from a need for validation.)

Please explain why the sociopath and the borderline get attracted to one another. Please explain what in hell would make a sociopath or a psychopath "happy" by being around a needy person. I do get why I would not want to be around a needy person who had shame issues. I alo get why I'd wan to give up control. I am a bit overtaxed so I lke another perso in the driver's seat. But what the hell is attractive to the sociopath about someone who has a rocky sense of self. What the hell is the appeal? I can't imagine going out with me and enjoying to toy with me. Is it because my mind is malleable? ? I don't get that. My sense ofself is really strong and independent and then also adaptive. SO what is so challenging? THe power a sociopath would get from changing my "self" around a bunch? To watch the tides turn? I understand why a arcissist woud b interested in me , but a sociopath? whatever for?

    8. BoD, you are. You can be nice to friends, that doesn't mean you're an asshole to people you aren't friends with. You were malicious from the beginning actually, when I was accused of being WL21. You appear to be empathy challenged- I wouldn't have a hard time believing you were a psychopath, but you're not, so that's not the problem. You're just an ass. You didn't directly make fun of her situation, but you were callous and uncaring with your reaction to someone being a "suicidal bipolar shit." You were concerned with how her issues were a turn off for you, you cared nothing about her pain and cutting, and when you thought two of your "girls" drove her away from it being too much pain to handle, you were happy. Maybe it takes the same thing happening to a kid or a daughter of yours, or some other loved one for you to give a crap. Then, people would like you would look like complete assholes you want to beat up. I'm so glad it was me and not her, or her mother that saw you and the others.

Then here you are thinking I'm some abused tranny, and you're high fiving your friend for going into great detail with mocking it. You CONDONED it. To you, it's okay to call abused people "daddy's little fuck toy." I have a friend who was abused, and she'd like a big piece of you and the other one.

Monica is out of her mind to think you're sweet or nice at all. I haven't even seen you be particularly sweet or nice to any friends, anyway. Just not rude or mean.

His reaction to the stuff being posted that was supposedly written by "me" in another forum. What was posted is after quotes of what he said. I completely forgot about this stuff.

"The fucker denies she wrote that stuff. She denies being WL from the psychforums. Can you fucking believe that?"

He's also being pretty fake on here. "Thanks Monica, that meant a lot." He's just playing into the I'm Innocent stuff. I wanted to hurl when I read that. Oh please, he never talks like that on the forums- and I'm not just talking about to me when he's attacking me. I'm talking about to anyone, attacking or not. It doesn't fit him.

    21. finally pasted what i was saying earlier... there you go, monica. youll probably just ignore it. ill never forget this.

    22. I don't go on the Forum much, as it is too much to read and hard to follow if you are not in the fight~

I just got a lot of respect for BoD because he would stick his neck out for new people and people, in general.
I admired that. Plus, he is a general sweetie

    23. fine... ive never seen this general sweetie stuff. you've seen the nice, and i've the seen ugly side, but believe me, it can get very ugly. i was new, and he just hopped on the bandwagon with the others to attack me. im not wl21, but if i was, why is that so bad? some people have problems. if i had tried suicide and was bipolar + other issues, i wouldnt deny it. if i cut, i wouldnt deny it. just makes b0d look sad. i dont believe i did anything to annoy anyone, or et cetera; theyd just make unprovoked remarks and exaggerate, but even if i was somehow unintentionally annoying it doesnt excuse b0d's behavior.

well, at least someone got to see a nice side to b0d. maybe hes changed. how long has he been here?

    24. If you come to SW, anyone, you are gonna get attacked. It is a rite of passage. You will find one or two people to be on your side. That will be enough to stay, if you are like I am.

If you stay. you will learn many lessons about yourself because this is a no BS place xx

    25. the other attacks were one thing, but he has done the most to me. there are some lines you dont cross. even if the crowd does it, that doesnt mean its ok. in the fight, his little friends made one person that wasnt against me leave, because she got so sick of what she saw. it was too bad for her, so for her health, she left. do you know opinion/forsaken?

    26. she told me i should too, but ill stick it out. no one is claiming to be on my side, exactly, but not everyone is attacking me either.

    27. "and...how low of some of you to make fun of such a tragic thing. There is no fun-value at all.Sick.sick.sick!! I need a sw break." that's what she said. it wasnt b0d himself, but he just rolled with it, so to speak. main blame for that one is on the friend though.

  24. Corporations are absolutely sociopathic because of their bottom line. However, like sociopaths, they can choose to act in a benevolent manner out of their own best interest- and often do. Corporations are amoral. Corporations reside in the world of power and winning first. I could do on, but there is nothing empathetic about a corporation in our present "free" market system. A benevolent sociopath could not survive intact in the corporate world unless they were lying to themselves all day every day. You want to talk about wannabe sociopaths? Talk to an empath on wall street.

  26. Sociopaths tend to go into a field where they can take advantage as many people as possible.

  27. Arguing on behalf of the advantages of greed and exploitation can't be easy.
The notion that "corporations" represent the only model that can bring prosperity is either naive or down right disingenuous. The "co-operative" model can do the same thing and do it in a way that is more fair and socially conscious. There is no reason to believe that workers cannot manage a company and their financial affairs as well as a "board of directors" who have no further interest in the company than to see how much money they squeeze from it. The co-op mitigates the vast disparity between the people "at the top," making and the money and the workers at the bottom getting a pittance for their time and toil. The corporate model had its day but is obsolete and unable to meet the challenges that the whole planet is currently facing.

  28. Corporations and excutives must fight and make profits in "The hunger games".
Though excutive may knew conscience, I think they can't in the market circumstances aspect.

  29. And I think not sociopathy make naive ppl disgusting but circumstances that have limited goods and resources make ppl sociopathic.
