Narcissists vs. Sociopaths (part 4)

(cont.)

Can Someone Really Be a Very Low Empathy Narcissist and Not Know It?

Yes! Narcissists won't often know much about their state. Just look at Bernie Madoff in this article -- he feels very uncomfortable about the idea that he might be a sociopath.  Sure, he knows he did a  bunch of bad things. But at the same time, he knows that deep down he's good inside. That's that typical narcissist self-deception; he's trying to avoid any shame, or even any awareness of shame.

Malignant narcissists will often do terribly cruel things to others. They'll tell themselves that the other guy had it coming to him. For a classic malignant narcissist, see this story.

Like Madoff, the malignant narcissist in that story, Raucci, thinks of himself as a very good guy. He really puts himself out for his friends. In a sense he's correct, and that should be the clue that he isn't a sociopath. Were he a sociopath, he wouldn't take other people (and whether they are with or against him) so personally.

Sociopaths aren't nearly as dangerous as narcissists. Narcissists get on self-destructive crusades, because it makes them feel good. Sociopaths avoid crusades, because crusades are expensive.

This statement sums up my confusion as to whether I'm a sociopath or just have sociopathic traits. I do/have so many sociopathic things, but I don't go on any crusades or attempt to hurt people for no reason.

It also makes me question psychiatric definitions in the first place (a great book on this is Doctoring the Mind by Richard Bentall).

    1. If you make mistakes, do you feel shame?

E.g. suppose you post something on facebook. You later realize you've got a spelling error or dropped a word, do you feel exposed/vulnerable/stressed?

Are you hypercompetitive in fields that don't matter? That is, do you want to win just so that you can win? If you can't win at something or be the best, do you avoid doing it?

Are you hypersensitive to criticism? E.g. take something you don't care about. If someone were to criticize your choices, would you feel defensive? E.g. say you don't normally care about your car. If someone said, "your car is dirty," would you get irritated? Or would you say, "so what."

If you pass a mirror, do you feel the need to check yourself out?

    2. I just don't really give a crap about anything.
I have an extremely limited range of emotion.
The only fear I feel is limited to the "startle reflex".
      I have no empathy.
      I have no shame.
I don't get embarressed, feel guilt, nor jealousy.
But I don't hurt people, I just don't care about them if they irritate me or if they don't provide me with anything.

    3. Just to add: I guess the first statement of "I just don't really give a crap about anything." isn't strictly true. I'm quite successful at what I do, and that holds some value to me. When I say I don't give a crap about anything I mean that if people abandon me or play mind games I don't care. I simply walk away knowing I'm better than them because I'm not that pathetic.

E.g. - no, but i might correct it if it won't take much time. And i don't post much on facebook.

I like chalanges, however i don't really care if i win. Also i am not hypercompetitive.

Why would i care about what i don't care about (No)

No, unless i was outside and the strong wind was blowing and my head probbably looks like a nest. I don't do anything without a reason.

      So what am i?

    5. You sound like a sociopath, Julian. I think the affect is what makes a sociopath more than the actions, if you know what I mean.

Did you have a lot of abuse?

      Delete
    7. It's difficult to classify I think because psycho/sociopaths are usually coupled with malicious behaviour (which I think is an incorrect assumption to make). Like you I think affect is the defining characteristic.

And yeah I had a lot of psychological abuse. I also bore witness to domestic violence at a young age. There was some dubious events which could be classified as sexual abuse, but I'm not sure how far it went as I was very young and don't remember it.

      Delete
    8. Yes, it seems that sociopaths have certain tendencies which may decide the turn the abuse will take. However, I am doubtful one is born with it other than in rare cases as is the case of an Albino, for example. I think the rarity of being born a sociopath is like the rarity of being born an Albino is what I mean. I think the people who are born with sociopath tendencies which the environment can turn on are the majority.

    9. The majority of scientists agree that there is a genetic predisposition for sociopathy; as there
are for fear and others. 50% DNA and 50% enviornment. But, needless, to say there is a highly
known actor that had this issue from the crib but
with the help of a good psychiatrist is a beautiful
person and that does not operate from the better-than

When someone does you dirty and you feel bad, or if someone is trying to diminish you and it is getting to you, you must always repeat to yourself "I am the Queen of England" put space at the back of your neck muscles, relax neck, elongate, unfurrow the brow, put your eyes exactly on the person and give a little smile. Then take a breath and just let it go.

No one will know what you feel inside. And you never tell the other you knew what they were doing. then you cause them to lose face. If they lose face you can lose them or feel responsible for picking them up. More work. Just economize your energy. You can still walk away and think they're idiots. But you are completely able to return when you want.

    5. Sorry I didn't see your comment there!

I just see people's mind games as a waste of time and people should just say what they mean. Mind games come in many forms - from attempts at manipulation, being poilte, trying to play "hard to get" etc. I like to not have to deal with that as much as I can and so if peole are resorting to negative mind games I either tell them what I think or just walk away.

As for being polite - it's just another form of lying, both to yourself and the person you're being polite to. Of course it serves a purpose to have a quiet life, but most of the time I don't bother with molly coddling people.

Playing hard to get - dating games are no fun to me and as such I am quite blunt with prospective partners. It has served me well so far and if someone is using these games then I leave them by the wayside.

Does that help? I'm open to more questions.

      Delete
    6. Thanks.

Mind games can be fun if you know how to play them. And you don't really have a choice BUT to walk away if they abandoned you first, correct?

My first comment was sarcasm. I thought it was funny how a person abandoning you is suddenly pathetic. It sounds more like anger and pain from leaving when you weren't ready for them to, and to move on with your life you conjured up an excuse in your head (them being pathetic) to feel better about yourself, and being left behind.

What's the gist of your story? I have not been keeping up with the comments, and would like to know what brought you here.

      Delete
    7. You've lumped the abandonment and the mind games into the same thing, which was my fault for explaining poorly. I meant that with mind games I just walk away, with abandonment I meant that I simply don't care - people always have reasons for it, some of them sensible and some not. The pathetic people are the mind games people ;)

I've always felt alone in the world (alone does not mean lonely!) and so I wanted to find out how other people experience life being this way. I have a good knowledge of mental health and psychology but knowledge of theory and research does not always equate to knowledge of lived experiences. I simply wanted to know more.

RE: Anger and pain at being left behind - if I could properly explain to you how it is to not feel such deep emotions, then you'd understand that this is not the case here.

      Delete
    8. Yeah, you did explain this poorly.

I guess where my issue and confusion come in is your use of words. You used "pathetic" and "abandon", which are intense words to describe situations that don't move you. They are emotionally based, and this creates a huge contradiction.

It's interesting that you feel alone in the world surrounded by people. Do you see yourself as a sociopath? And have you sated your "aloneness" yet?

      Delete
    9. I come across as experiencing a lot of emotion, because I'm excellent at mimicry. I've been doing it since I was a child. And so the words I use and the actions I display are there in order to convey things to other people and it enables me to appear normal.

I do this effortlessly and without thinking. The difference for me is that I do not feel what I display.

I am unsure as to whether I am a sociopath or not. Sometimes I think I might be, but other times I don't. I definitely have many of the attributes but when it comes to the nuances of sociopathy I question if I am. However, I can fit into almost any social group without problems and I absorb other people's personalities.

I feel alone because I cannot connect sufficiently with anyone. One of the reasons for it is that I cannot articulate the way I am to empaths/normal people. I also think that if I did then they would get the pitchforks out and call me a sociopath - I feel that way because when people realise I have limited emotions the first thing they joke about is sociopathy.

Well, this definitely takes some space to explain!

I had a request from Raven for a diagnosis. I don't think this can be left in the hands of a rank amateur such as Monica to whom she was making the request. As such, I will do an evaluation and bill the hours to ME of SW, USA.

Raven has shown herself to be a person capable of surviving. For that, she has shown personal strength and high intelligence. Each patient has strengths and weaknesses. I will explore both. For strengths, Raven has native intelligence. She has a high level of creativity, as well. Her other form of intelligence would be what we call "street smarts". Her life has proven to be a pulling herself up using all the forms of intelligence available to her. Many people who came from her background would not have been able to do this. For this, she deserves a lot of commendation. I will continue in part 2.

      Delete
    37. Franklin Fomentile PhdApril 23, 2012 at 4:25 AM

      Part Two
Raven has commensurate weakness which may be the opposite side of the coin to her strengths. In having to survive a highly abusive background, she needed to blunt several parts of her emotional AND mental nature. When I say mental, I do not mean intelligence. I have expressed the high level of intelligence in Part One. I am referring to a high level of black and white thinking of which she is unaware. In fact, she prides herself on independent thinking. This may be the biggest fault line in her particular geography. This blindness, as was the topic of ME's new post, is to what I am referring.

Raven has several large blind spots which could cause potential trouble if she is not careful. I will address these in Part Three.

      Delete
    38. Franklin Fomentile PhdApril 23, 2012 at 4:32 AM

      Part Three

Raven had emotional and mental blunting due to her abusive childhood. As I said earlier, she has survived with a great deal of tensile strength. However, there are bound to be limitations. I will address those, here.

Raven has strong black and white thinking which forces her to view people and situations in a limited capacity. It is like concrete childlike thinking. The problem to this is that Raven could easily attach herself to someone she sees as "stronger". She would have the worker bee syndrome. This would be fine if she found the right person. If not, it could prove problematic. Hopefully, she will not allow this to play out in a deleterious manner. Up to this point, she has not but her thinking has impairments in this area.

      Delete
    39. Franklin Fomentile PhdApril 23, 2012 at 4:37 AM

The other problem area is a projection of her blunted emotional condition onto others. Projection is a common defense mechanism as is reaction formation. Raven sees people as cast off parts of herself. Hence, she demonizes people who fit the category of HER cast off nature. This is more of a reaction formation than pure projection as she has no awareness of it. This trait could make problems for her if she uses this defense mechanism at the wrong time with the wrong people. She has no awareness of it which is the inherent problem. I conclude my report as the golf course calls me.I am available on a case by case situation and do charge commensurate to my worth.

      Respectfully Yours
      Dr. Franklin Fomentile

I want to point out an obvious flaw in Franklin's assessment.
No offense to you Franklin. I thought you had some great things to say.

You say she has a high level of creativity, then contradict that by saying she has strong black and white thinking. You also say that she has beat extraordinary odds, that most people from her background would not be able to, then go on to say she has worker bee syndrome.

Those contradictions make me think you are either confused by her, or there are two sides to your perception of her. Part of you admires her, and part of you wants to make her to be less than you because you want her to admire you.

I think you might be the one projecting yourself here, Franklin. You have some blind spots of your own. :)

    51. Anon 9:39
People are complex and multi faceted with contradictions which may seem incompatible but they are not. Raven could be creative and still easily led by the right person(s). These are not mutually exclusive if one looks at humans on more than a cursory level.

Raven has beaten odds but could, easily, be a worker bee to a charismatic leader(s). That is what I meant by "worker bee" syndrome. She does not have enough core individuation was my larger point. That is my overall diagnosis if one had to hone it to a word. Thank you for your patience in assessing my work and Cheerio until next time.

      Delete
    52. LOL They would have to be VERY charismatic! I don't see that about her AT all! She is immune to flattery. I don't think she could be easily lead by anyone. Where do you get this from? Street smart people are not easily lead. She is too much of a loner. You're reaching Franklin. I think you have a personal issue with her, and that is blinding you to the facts. Are you Monica? Getting along with people you understand, does not make you a worker bee. Worker bees don't stray from their programming. They don't need their leader to have charisma. They just follow the person in charge.

Why do you study her so closely? Until now, I've never seen you have a conversation with her. I've never really seen you, come to think of it. Creeper much? Let's hear what your diagnoses of yourself is now.

      Delete
    55. Very interesting guy. He seemed to know his stuff.

    56. ^LOL you probably ARE him! Everyone else sees Raven about the same way!

      Delete
    57. That is to say, everyone sees her different than you! :-p

    58. Raven is the charismatic one. Have you been to the forum? Look at how many people want to get in her pants!

      Delete
    59. I don't know about Ravens pants------eeew.

    60. Dr F is a good therapist.

      Delete
    61. Fuck it was one interesting case study. Who is next Dr F?

      Delete
    62. LOL In the beginning I wasn't even interested about what was going on with this thread, until Franklin left his long winded opinion one Raven! Now I'm really curious about her.

How come this Dr. F doesn't thrown up a diagnoses on other people here? I've never seen him do anyone else! Are you a Raven creeper, Franklin?

      Delete
    63. Franklin = Monica
      Get over it.

      Delete
    64. No way? Dr Franklin is not Monica. Where do you get that? This place is a nut house.

      Delete
    65. That guy was a fucking good shrink if you ask me. I want to hear what he says about everyone lmao

      Delete
    66. I, agree, this place is really a nut house!

    67. Franklin is more intelligent than Monica. Franklin
      is not Monica.....

      Delete
    68. Yes, Monica is a ditz. No offense Monica. I am sure you are a hottie.

      Delete
    69. ^The only way that Dr. F could be Monica is that she
posted a case study from a book and integraded her
insights from SW. But here's my RIGHT ON DIAGNOSIS
      about Monica; she LOVES ATTENTION.

      Delete
    70. I agree that Dr F is not Monica. I don't know if Monica likes attention. She just comments on the material. What the fuck?

      Delete
    71. ^That's my opinion - sorry to offend you - Monica?

      Delete
    72. What a mess!
This is crazy stuff. Dr F is good. Maybe, he can analyze me. I am sure he would have a few good words to say.On second though, forget it LOL

      Delete
    73. Dr. F is not Monica. In fact, Dr. F- isn't always Dr. F. See how post 4:20AM - 4:37 differ from 7:48 & 9:21? Wheres the Phd? It should be saved in the Name URL bar, if its a repeat. And why does a Dr. hang out here all day?? He gets paid to talk to psychos.. I seriously doubt he's doing volunteer work. Not to mention the condescending tone of 7:48 & 9:21 sounds suspiciously like a sociopath, "Dear".. I think the initial posts were from a professional. They have that clinical undertone and directive. I do not know Raven enough to know how accurate his diagnosis was. However Anon 9:39 makes some sharp observations. From the little I do know of her, its a safe assumption she's laughing her ass off at all of us for having this debate! ;P

      Delete
    78. Whoever Dr F is or isn't, this has been an enjoyable day on SW.

      Delete
    79. Where IS Raven anyway?? I thought she would have shown up by now to say something crass! LOL

      Delete
    80. Response to 2:34

      Ask me if I care.......

      Delete
    81. I like what Grey has to say on the matter. But I wonder how a Phd would even know how to diagnose someone who they haven't studied? What WAS the diagnoses anyway? Why would a doctor just show up here and pick some random person to diagnose on the fly like that?? It's suspicious all the way around. It makes no sense for a doctor to be following one person on here to evaluate ONLY them! This HAD to be a SW regular who has frequently conversed with her.

I have no clue what Raven's background is. But this Franklin seems to know a lot about her abuse issues.

I rarely see her interact enough with anyone on here, so I'm willing to bet it's someone who has way too much time on their hands, and spends way too much time observing what she says. What other explanation can there be?

      Delete
    82. Fuck it.It has been fun. Thank you Dr Frank. You are welcome on SW, anytime you want.

      Delete
    83. The doctor stated that this was a request:
"I had a request from Raven for a diagnosis. I don't think this can be left in the hands of a rank amateur such as Monica to whom she was making the request. As such, I will do an evaluation and bill the hours to ME of SW, USA."

I don't know WHY it was a request, or more importantly why a Doctor would cooperate with a request like that. I suspect he is seeing her as a patient, and was compensated to do this. What I don't get is how he is going to bill ME for this. I sense irritation in his beginning statement.

      Delete
    84. All I know is that this has been fun, but I'm not paying for Raven's analysis. lol

      Delete
    85. Yes, Grey. You are always a singular voice of reason.

      Delete
    86. Agreed. It's just a SW regular trying to play doctor. It's so obvious. My question is why this happened in the first place? What was the point? the last part of the analysis is something that could apply to anyone. Who wouldn't want to be around someone who has an extreme amount of charisma? Anyone could be attracted to that.

      Delete
    87. The question is 'Who is next, Dr Frank? Any volunteers?

      Delete
    88. LOL Grey! You must be very new here. No one requested this diagnoses! And here, you had me thinking you were astute in your observations! LOL

      Delete
    89. Why are you thanking Monica, Grey? She hasn't said anything to you.

      Delete
    90. Can you read?
"I had a request from Raven for a diagnosis. I don't think this can be left in the hands of a rank amateur such as Monica to whom she was making the request. As such, I will do an evaluation and bill the hours to ME of SW, USA."

If you don't believe me- scroll up!

      Delete
    91. Post 3:21 sure sounded like it. But, then again, didn't we decide all Anonymous's are Monica's?? lol

      Delete
    92. Why is Grey and Monica always kissing each others a*s?

      Delete
    93. I'm telling you, Raven would not request that. It's a joke and all of you are falling for it. I've never seen this much collective stupidity in all the time of coming here.

      Delete
    94. Come on.. Can't you find the humor in getting a Doctor to post on SW to spite Monica?

      Delete
    95. So what was the diagnoses? That Raven is a human! LOL
I don't see any real conclusion. It sounds more like a psychic reading than a diagnoses from a qualified professional. Does she have a PD or what??

      Delete
    96. Dr Frank is good. What more do you douche bags want for free?

      Delete
    97. Where are you when we need you Raven??!!
Please come here and tell these retards that you did not ask someone to diagnose you!!!!!!

  19. I haven't been too moved with the posts because I already knew the difference. I didn't realize it was that hard to see it. Either I am just freakishly amazing at seeing things, or I am seeing the obvious and everyone else is incredibly stupid and unobservant.

Anon 10:01, what are you even talking about? I had a very hard time comprehending that mess. After reading the part that says, "They make you feel bad" I started to get confused to your whole point. Are you describing a mind game.....or something? Help this beaver out :D!

  20. The whole thing please, oh dearest Raven.

What the hell does this have to do with anything. I don't know why this was written.

    1. Oh that's easy my darling Piles... it's just a bunch of hippie, new age ramblings, to help you calm your spirit. You should probably light some sage too. Rub some lavender oil on your temples in a circular motion. Focus on your core while you breathe. Burn your toenail clippings in a clay bowl, and then piss on it while chanting, "I am the child of the forest. Please send your tree fairies to protect me..." :D

      I hope that helped you.

  22. I shall exploit this opportunity to quote the wise words of the Buddha as I travel the path of pempopathy.

Onlooking equanimity can be maintained in being towards a person with whom you are annoyed; this too is how annoyance with him can be removed. The forgetting and ignoring of a person with whom you are annoyed can be practiced; this too is how annoyance with him can be removed. Ownership of deeds in a person with whom you are annoyed can be concentrated upon thus: "This good person is owner of his deeds, heir to his deeds, his deeds are the womb from which he is born, his deeds are his kin for whom he is responsible, his deeds are his refuge, he is heir to his deeds, be they good or bad." This too is how annoyance with him can be removed.

    2. It is using depersonalization. I had gotten mixed up between dissociation and depersonalization. There is a big difference, imo, in that the latter is active with a specific goal. The former is just inert and defensive and not nearly as crafty. You can do a lot with both.

It's a good thing for people with trigger tempers, too.

I am anon 1001. It is a mind game you play but with yourself. I like to play with myself sometimes, sometimes not ,, depends on the arrangement of the vast array of my emotions circling my psyche at all times, the alignment of the cosmos and so on and so forth..
