Almost sociopath (part 2)

From a reader (cont.)

The main issue in my hesitation at self-diagnosis is this...I know enough people similar to me - in and out of my own family - that also fit these parameters to a certain extent to still be unsure.

My mother seemed to have had similar experiences in her past.  She is a control freak with those around her (though especially with me) and has to be right (Dr Phil asks "would you rather be right or happy?", to her being right IS being happy).  She is very charming, people seem to like her a great deal, but when they prove to be less-than in some way to her she'll grow a tad nasty with them...this includes me with whom she's grown overly aggressive to the point of abusive - emotionally and mentally if not, once or twice, physically.

My grandmother is the same...though seems more borderline/narcissistic in personality and her behavior may also be due to other medical issues.  My grandfather was known to have many behavioral problems as a boy/teen and was, even by his own confession looking back, abusive to his children ("it was the way it was back then"), but did well in the navy and, after the birth of his children, did not have criminal issues at all to my knowledge.  One aunt was known to be promiscuous and switch her entire personality with each mate (I always imagined borderline more than anything) while the other settled happily into a marriage in which both her and husband live beyond their means without much concern for the future consequences - :cough: IRS audit :cough:.  My uncle is the most clearly the "typical sociopath" with a string of moves, jobs, and even (easily debunk-able) lies in his wake - he is also, though, the lowest-functioning person in the family so that could be why I'm most aware of his "typical" sociopathic behavior.

Some of my friends often seem to have the same viewpoint and will make similar-type jokes as me - including those others have called "wrong", "mean", etc - and will both laugh at and repeat my own.  They seem amused by the same things, to wanna do the same things, and believe the same general things as I do...but I wonder if this one isn't a bit of a chicken and the egg situation.  Are they conforming to me or am I conforming to them?

Or am I seeing a likeness that's not truly there for some self-denial/self-comforting (they're similar, thus like me, thus I'm "normal") reason??  (Other family members, to my knowledge, have not done any sort of cruelties to those around/close to them and they emote more frequently with more genuineness, it seems.)     ....OR are they all also truly like me?

And, if both family and friends are truly like me, then am I not a sociopath at all?  Or, maybe, am I an "almost" or "borderline" sociopath (most self-tests online came back as this or as "high-functioning")?  OR have I been surrounded by enough my own kind for long enough that I never realized what, exactly, my "kind" was until your blog, which resonates so thoroughly with me I swear I could've written some of the posts myself?

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated, any thing you need answered in order to help me I'll answer (outside the details of true name, etc, of course).  If you wish to put this up on the blog that is also fine...perhaps others are in a similar situation as mine and need the help.

Sincerely

"Skye"

PS: Please note I'm a tad late to the game on this - I'm 30 - but was always a late bloomer in personality, if I was to move to the next stage at all.  (I only truly realized the gender of my mate is irrelevant to me a few years ago, I still live with my mother due to crap financial issues - I'm working to rectify this one now - and never moved beyond the "I shouldn't do that because, if caught, I'll get in trouble"...it is seriously the only thing that keeps me in line, if I think I can get away with something I will absolutely give it a go.)

  1. This blog has become shallow and pedantic. I think it's forgot its purpose and it shouldn't still be on anymore. How long do you think you'll be able to keep this up ME?

    1. I don't agree with you. The blog is still interesting, and this woman shows her true sociopathy in the very last PS section with her parasitic existence as opposed to all that how brilliant and manipulative she was up until that point. She could well be in a family of borderlines, including herself.

    2. I'm glad that you formulated your sentence this way: "The blog is still interesting, and this woman shows her true sociopathy in the very last.".

First, the coma before "and" is punctuation mistake and shows what kind of intellect you posses. Second, in programming languages and maths, "and" is used in conditions for decision making. If 1 and 2, then 3, else 4. Even if your 1 is entirely up to your subjective choices, 2 is false and so... not 3; and 4. :P

      Delete
    3. Does that really matter? And there are points where a coma is added before "and". Although in this case the person didn't use or correctly

    4. Oh and for criticising other people's grammar. Yours aren't great either. You need to put an 'a'
In front of punctuation, making it "'and' is a punctuation mistake, not 'and' is punctuation mistake. You are also suppose to put 'it' after 'and'. As in "and 'it' shows what kind of intellect you possess. Speaking of which, intellect is not described as 'kind', what you mean is the 'level' of intellect. I just can't stand things like these

  2. She's a woman!

Mother is more suggestive of a narc.

Not a psychologist, but Skye bends my thoughts towards emotional immaturity.

If someone showed me a round fruit and asked if it's an apple, I would classify it according to what I know. The fruit is black, and I personally have never seen a black apple. But there might be some genetically modified apple out there...

  3. To comment this I would like to add that the way I see it, all human personalities are constructed of several elements bordering to various diagnosis. The manual for psychiatric disorders (DSM IV if I remember correctly) defines all kinds of mental disorders with all kinds of symptoms of these. The chance of anyone having some of those symptoms without actually having the grounds for the diagnosis is immense.

You can be anxious without suffering from anxiety, you can feel down without being clinicly depressed in the need of medication, you can be over cautious without being paranoid to the extent of a disorder. You can be cold and manipulative with a low feel for social norms without actually being a sociopath.

The line between disorders and normal behaviour would be obvious and definate in the time we considered classic mental insanity as the only form for real mental deviation. Today this line that divides normal from abnormal is thin, as we are all in need of adaptation to a society our ancenstrial genetics never were evolved to face.

  4. So you still live with your mom at 30 because she needs to keep you in line? Say what you want about yourself but you stick out as a sore thumb like someone who isnt being honest with themselves.

    1. I am starting to wonder if ME invents these characters. On the other hand there may quite a few sadomasochists out there combined with hero-worship for ME. Who knows?

Dr Phil asks "would you rather be right or happy?

      Too funny.

What about figuring out why you still need your mother or your mother you?

  6. Perhaps it's the empathy in me, my astrological placements, my
numerlogical numbers, the fact that I'm an ennagram 4 and an INFJ.
I don't like the viciousness directed at M.E.! If you don't have anything
nice to say don't say anything at all!
How much longer do you think M.E. is going to put up with your abuse?
She doesn't have to take it. She can do just as well without the blog as
with it. 5yrs is a long time for a sociopath to engage in any one type
of activity. I'm actually surprised it has lasted this long.
So what happens? M.E. gets tired of the abuse. She shuts down the blog.
What are we left with? The non-stop pity party on LoveFraud? Or the
"profiler" blogs? With M.E. we have the genuine article. As far as I'm
conserned, it's bad enough that she's going to take off sooner or later.
We don't have to make it sooner. My only critism of the blog is that it's
a tad bit too intellectual for me. Many of the statements are above my
head. But even so, it's a novel blog, one of a kind, and allows for
freedom of expression that we don't get elsewhere. I don't want to go
through the rigamorle of being "registered" to express my opinions. I
like the simplicity of just posting my opinions.
M.E. is every bit as interesting as the topics she writes on. What would
be your "educated guess" on what the future holds for M.E.? I hope that
she can avoid the dreaded "stressor" that flips the switch to voilent
behavior as long as possible. THAT would be tragic.

this is more interesting than the maudlin lady:

Empathy: I was puzzled about the warnings prefaced in the BBC reports on the Syria quagmire: The following report contains some disturbing images. Seemingly even experts were puzzled about what they saw, or the social media evidence, too. Interesting article.

Good luck with the Islamist forces that are by now controlling the opposition forces it seems. ...

  7. Maybe she could become mormom like M.E. I heard if you become a missionary you could live in a free house and "preach the word" for the rest of your life.

She could become a sociopathic preacher with a success story about how she moved out of her mom's house and learned not to wreck havok on her friends lives by not crying during movie-time

    2. He's telling the truth, Mach. It's not prettily worded, but it's nonetheless true.

Sociopaths went from being people with a personality disorder that greatly affects their life to cuddly, enlightened fucking yogis who never hurt a fly and would happily take a bullet, or jump on a grenade, to help others.

I actually like the fact that Misanthrope calls people on their bullshit and the fact that he does it in a funny, sarcastic way.
Too many delusional, narcissistic people are trying very, very hard to warp what being sociopathic really means because they desperately want that label. They twist it out of all proportion.

An example we see all too often on here:
First, a "true" sociopath is a perfectly normal person, who never does anything wrong (because they are too clever), but don't feel any empathy or guilt. Nobody is immune to their charm, so they manipulate and seduce as they please...etc, etc, etc.

They paint sociopaths as fucking Twilight vampires. All the glittery, seductive parts, without all that messy hurting people stuff.

Then they get called on their crap. Such as that they are deluded, not charming; for expressing what is quite clearly effective empathy and their inability to seduce or manipulate a $40 whore with $50. Instead of stopping and saying "hmm, maybe I am normal and just need to take responsibility for my failures", they change the game. "Aaah, but sociopaths do have empathy and I'm too smart to need to manipulate or play power games with the likes of you, so of course you won't see it, you plebian"

Or worse yet, they start wanting to act worse to make the label fit. They are the ones that really make me laugh. It's just so incredibly pathetic. Fucking up their life and hurting those that manage to tolerate them, on purpose, to give themselves a label. So they can keep fucking up, but feel better about themselves.

"Amateur misfits noisily fall out with people; true sociopaths never burn a bridge." Straight from twitter. This is the type of moronic bullshit I'm talking about.

  8. I have been sitting back and enjoying the show these last two days...so many interesting opinions.

To clarify certain things because reading and/or its comprehension is not a strong suit for some of you:

I live with my mother for financial reasons, not some misguided effort to control myself. (I'm a writer, it doesn't pay well, but I can live with her rent/most other expenses free. End of story.) She allows this because...I don't know, familial bonds and a sense of control on her own part I imagine.

I confess I can be emotionally immature at times, though not sure what was expected given I don't feel emotions as strongly as most to start.

I also confess I have control issues, that I don't like being the one left in relationships. For those I don't care for it's less of an issue (good-riddance and all), but if I do care and the person leaves I will work hard to get them back only to leave them myself. ...It's simply part of who I am.

Many of the stories were ones from my youth, hence the usages of past tense and phrases like "in my youth". At current I no longer resort to bullying as I can manage manipulation of most just fine and the same holds for physical altercations, which I only engage in now under self-defense or an agreed upon arrangement (sparring, rough sexual activity, etc).

Concerning any of the "she's a wannabe" claims...don't flatter yourselves as I presume that's what any of you claiming such a thing are doing. Sociopathy isn't a cool kids' club I wrote to ME in attempts to join. I merely wanted clarification on something I'd been suspecting for some time now and wouldn't dare risk going to a psychologist to find out.

Whether anyone thinks I qualify for the label of sociopath or not is wholly irrelevant to me...between the time I wrote ME and her posting now I've become clearer on who/what I am. Now I aim to be the best version of that rather than debating or denying it as I'd done for far too long.

That being said...thanks for the interesting and entertaining feedback everyone.

    1. Just one note: emotional immaturity cannot be likened to "not feeling emotions as strongly". Sociopaths should actually have a relatively high EQ (simply conjecturing, before someone feels like differing again). The simple reason being that these individuals have to study the emotions of people in order to determine the most effective approach to them. So not feeling does not imply that one cannot acquire an ability to detect and respond to the feelings of others.

Your post was actually refreshing. I am inclined to think your letter would have been a lot more balanced if you blended this more objective perspective with the letter, in my opinion.

Thank you for entertaining the comments...

    2. Skye, I am wondering if not most people people prefer breaking up relationships.

I was wondering about the dominance of your mother and the absence of your father in your tale.

Why is it that the control issue surfaces in the description of your mother and in your need to control the end of relationships. Is that an accident?

      Delete
    3. To LeaNder:

Oh I imagine so - though some still find strain/troubles in being the one to break it off as well - the aspect that's different with me is that I'll go back just to dump them myself...to my knowledge that's not common practice.

...More subconscious I imagine. I acknowledge they're likely connected in some way - lack of sense of control in one situation/area causes the person to seek it out in other situations/areas - though I was not actively attempting to make the connection in my writing.

      Delete
    4. Oh I imagine so

Why do you think that is?

the aspect that's different with me is that I'll go back just to dump them myself...to my knowledge that's not common practice.

Saving face? Proving to yourself you are unique? Does it change anything essential for you personally, when you are bored to dead by the person? Wasting all the time, I mean.

As a writer you should dive slightly deeper.

Tell me something about your father? Is boring or dead or or otherwise absent?

    5. To LeaNder

Because you have the power in the relationship, you decided when it ended. That's always better.

In my earliest years it was a mix of narcissism and revenge, I confess. In college it was mostly a mix of control and challenging myself. Control in that I wanted to be the one who decided when and how it ended; especially if I felt attached to the person. The challenge came in seeing if I could win them back: Will this person, once so determined they were no longer interested in me, go back on their word? Will they fall for me again? Can I make them? Of course once I found out the answer I would grow officially and utterly bored (and oft time dismayed) with them. ...The last relationship I had in my mid-twenties I was able to just accept the person's decision, move on, and even remain their friend...I believe they call that growth, ha.

He left when I was an infant, never contacted me, and died approximately a year or two ago if my web search of him was successful.

    7. VEGITOPATH stop screaming. We heard you. I wonder if you get Monica back. I haven't notice her here.

      Skye,

consider this a sociopath test, the way ME teaches it. If you answered the father question, since it felt to you this is what I expected to hear, you surely have passed it.

Let me tell you the story of a woman that was vaguely on my mind since admittedly it fascinated me very much.

She too played these odd little games, that for me feel so much like a waste of time and energy, she once told me. Till she finally made one of my closest friends leave his wife and daughter. The daughter, by the way, was exactly her age when "she was left by her father". And she surely experienced it as if the father had left her. Which doesn't seem so obvious in your case, given the earlier age of your story?

The woman and my friend are not together anymore, but she now is able to invest her energy into her career and is doing enormously well. The marriage she broke up, by the way, wasn't worth much. I have admit that I did not like my friend's wife very much. She was an absolute bore.

Not too long ago the "adulturess", a highly interesting woman, told me that this event healed her more then psychotherapy. Spiritually she someone managed to get her father back and then could herself decide to let him go again. That's how it felt to her.

In other words I am more interested in the underlying dynamics then the surfaces.

  9. All to Cui Bono:

No, you're right, I should be better at reading people in real life and am working to correct that issue now. (Ironically in writing I can be quite skilled at portraying and understanding emotions.) ...I imagine having less social interaction than most overall has led this - I'm an only child, spent about 1/3 to half my life in and out of hospitals, and have the same friends since childhood who, well, forgive missteps easily and lack their own development in certain emotional areas.

You're probably right on the letter as well...it was shot off in a excitable moment and I was trying only to keep it under the novella it threatened to be, ha.

Not a problem and as I mentioned in the letter itself I'm fine with answering questions provided they aren't excessively personal.

So since you spent 1/3rd of your time in hospitals you feel like you need to give yourself some empowering label like a sociopath? You aren't empowering yourself, you are deluding yourself, and are doing a great job at that. Here is one example of your masterful delusion skills

"No, you're right, I should be better at reading people in real life and am working to correct that issue now."

So basically you are working to fit the label better.

Move along folks, nothing to see here.

    2. You don't have high reading comprehension do you, Misanthrope?

As I've mentioned - by now repeatedly - I'm not interested in any label.

The fact you so desperately want me to want the label of sociopath is sad. Did you feel special having it all to yourself for so long you're scared others will want it too? Don't flatter or work yourself into a tizzy on account of lil' ol' me. I'm not interested. (Amused, but not interested.)

I aim to improve social skills because I acknowledge their importance in everyday life, that's all. Nothing to panic about as I'm sure everyone has that goal no matter their personality.

"...I imagine having less social interaction than most overall has led this - I'm an only child, spent about 1/3 to half my life in and out of hospitals, and have the same friends since childhood..."

Regarding 'hospitals', would you mind specifying whether these stays were because of physical health conditions, or as a result of nervous breakdowns/etc...?

Also, how do you perceive your relationships with the enduring close friends? What difference/impact do you see these friends making in your life? In turn, why do you think they value your friendship? Do you see these relationships having advanced to a deeper level over the years, or do you talk about the same things/ do the same things you always have when together?

      Delete
    4. Cui Bono:

They were all health-related stays...I've had long-standing health issues since birth. I've never had a nervous breakdown, never been institutionalized, though was made to go to a therapist briefly as a teen when docs suspected mental issues were exacerbating health ones. (I disagreed with their suspicions, but relented as it got me out of the hospital faster.) It lasted a couple months, then the therapist left and that was it.

More often than not my childhood friends are a sense of comfort - they've known me for so long I don't need to fake things as much with them, which is a relief honestly. The impact they have depends on the specific friend; those who are sweet and moral help cause me to be the same and those who are a little devious themselves bring out that aspect of me. I notice that many are shy and value me for my boldness and that all know, if they need someone to join/help them on an errand or for an occasion or whatnot, I'm most likely to agree regardless of what it is they want to do.

The friends I've had since childhood often do/say the same things we always have, but I don't think that necessarily excludes there being depth. Because this set has known me for so long and they accept me as I am the bond I have with them is as deep as it is with family. That being said, they aren't always great for my own personal depth and can cause me to slip back into old habits that are very immature and even potentially destructive - I've recently requested my closest to be my moral/etiquette guide to prevent this from happening...so far it's been rather helpful and hopefully will remain so.

    5. Almost sociopath... As The Sociopath somewhere posted recently: most people are sociopathic to varying degrees. Since the traits associated with sociopathy aren't all that unheard of, many people will have a number of these traits that manifest to a greater or a smaller degree in their daily lives. However, having sociopathic traits (also depending on their origin and development) does not make someone a sociopath per se.

From what you said, you seem to be very impressionable, and yet - interestingly - 'bold'. A comforting friend and eager to help out your friends, also suggesting a sense of strong loyalty. Only you will be able to evaluate your inner motivations for these characteristics. Does helping them make you feel good about yourself, as on an altruistic level? Or do you find yourself weighing potential cost and benefits in helping them? Do you find that being considerate towards them is something you need to contemplate on a regular basis in order to keep your behaviour in check? (All rhetorical, of course)

Depending on how important clear definitions of yourself are to you, perhaps spending a period of time conducting life in your usual means, and at the same time consciously evaluating why you do things a certain way (a bit of introspection ) might prove to be more revealing. For instance, if you're standing at a checkout in a shop, and the person in front of you is taking forever getting enough coins together for a pint of milk, do you decide to pay for them because a) you feel sorry for them and would draw comfort from having made a small difference in their lives; b) the time you spare by paying for them is more valuable than the cash expense or c) it happens to be a very appealing person and paying is part of a scheme which entails getting more intimately acquainted with them; etc.

Getting a better understanding of what drives you is, in my opinion, the most effective way of building definitions of yourself.

    6. Cui Bono, thank you. I appreciate your honesty and actually attempting to listen and help me to better understand myself. Aid in self-reflection and honest opinions from others not so close to me are some of the key reasons I first wrote and am now glad ME wished to post the letter.

Since writing to her (and certainly more so the past few days) I've begun to make the effort to be more introspective on all levels. I've been able to clarify a few things already, which I imagine will prove valuable in the future, and shall continue to work on others. ...I imagine this self-check will be a continuous thing, but that it'll be worth it.

Thank you again, you've been most helpful.

No it is normal to want to improve social skills, but when you e-mail the author of a sociopath blog a giant essay about your life of wickedness and massive manipulation, it does come off as trying to fit something.

"Did you feel special having it all to yourself for so long you're scared others will want it too? "

Says the person on a sociopath blog commenting on every other thing they can as if the authority on it. I wanted clarification to something I already suspected without the risk of seeing a psychiatrist...ME offered that. (Something I already explained in writing, repeatedly, but...I know...your reading comprehension issues...)

I know he's an asshole and proud of it. But if you stop taking it so personally and really think about what he says, you might be surprised how much you can learn about yourself.

People's narcissism is the cause of quite a lot of misery and is something that is almost too easy to use against them.

    5. if there is narcissism in all sociopaths (even the humble self aware ones who are not deluded) there will be suffering. Why don't we all just admit narcissism sucks and try to acknowledge and accept one another and be kind rather than bash the other over the head.

    6. Ha! You have opened my eyes with your message of peace, love and mung beans. Now let's all have a big group hug (no groping!) and sing Amazing Grace.

But seriously, almost everyone has some narcissism.
Where it gets to be of a concern is when it runs wild aka NPD. The narcissism makes them so easy to exploit, easy to manipulate.

See my points above about narcissistic types wanting to empower themselves by giving themselves the "sociopath" label. But let me reiterate (I have a bad cold, so stuck home bored), they want one better.
They want to be what I'll call the "Sociopathic Elite".

They are not like those big bad assholes who steal, cheat, use and abuse people, fuck up coworkers' lives to get to the top and get into all sorts of sticky situations for fun.
No, they are the reeeaally smart, more evolved ones that can feel empathy and are very pro social, except of course when people get seduced by their irresistible wicked charms and end up "ruined".

And they do everything to have themselves be recognised as this Elite. The whole spectrum idea is a godsend here. While I agree with the theory, it's also made it ridiculously easy for them to stretch that line as far as they wish. After all, it is a spectrum ;)

Stop getting so butthurt and listen when they tell you are not Sociopathic Elite, you're narcissistic but otherwise normal. The differences are immense.

People like Misanthrope are not "one true sociopaths" set to valiantly protect the badass label. They are the ones that don't give a flying fuck what you label them as, as long as they get what they want.
They will not have a meltdown when you call them a narcissist, deluded, or anything else for that matter.

They are sociopaths, know that this is not Twilight and have seen countless "true sociopaths" coming through desperate for that label.
For the most part, people like him are far more honest (with themselves of course, not others) than you think.

And they have plenty of kind bones, hell they try to help people they don't give a fuck about to become honest with themselves. Granted, it's done in their own sarcastic asshole fashion and for their own amusement, but still :)

  12. I'm sorry for my bad grammar and formulation, english is not my mother tongue.

I don't have any diagnostic; but I have good traits of high functioning autism, schizoid, perharps AD(H)D, and I have a high IQ. And I'm intrigued:

    — I don't have any remorse, or I don't care; I care just about a possible revenge on me, something like that;
    — I don't really have empathy; I don't have feelings, perhaps a laugh or a slight "pleasure" (this is actually weird), when I visualize BestGore's videos, if an individual is crying, etc.; I can "activate" it, it's not as good as non-autistics people, but I can (no real evidences for the intensity, just a first appreciation);
    — I can feel a bit of pleasure (thanks anhenodia...) when I hit someone;
    — I "assaulted" (not really, I had "good" reasons for that) many guys, and every times I'm able to generate a good rhetorical speech; I keep my calm, no stress nor fear, a good feeling of pleasure, then my elbow collide with his head... and this give me a great joy;
    — now, I have a pretty good self-control, in fact, much better than the average ; but not every time: I can, without any reason, act impulsively, break something, through about destruction, etc.. In my childhood, I have thrown down many children, by pushing, pulling or tackling;
    — I'm not really fearless, but I'm not afraid in many situations where I'm supposed to be; sometimes, I feel that I'm untouchable.
    — I don't show emotions, probably because I have an alexitimia (can't understand own emotions), and I'm more rational than a lot of people (I love logic).

I don't think that I'm a sociopath, but this is really strange.
No sociopaths come to me, in fact, I scare some people in the street, at a party, everywhere, few peoples comes to speak with me. Many people told me that I have a weird, sometimes scary, gait; my gaze also is "scary".

  13. Very nice post! I read it last night and sent the link to my husband and said I thought this was interesting and asked him to read it. He spent literally 5-10 seconds and skimmed the page & said, Okay, so what? Which caused a tiny argument between us and I stormed out of the room thinking he just didn't care! Well... 10 minutes later he comes in to talk to me. Explained that when he first saw this article, he became defensive & non-receptive. He thought this was my way of saying he was a bad parent/husband (which wasn't the case at all!) He is great! But even good marriages could use tips on maintaining their greatness! So just an extra tip to everyone... make sure your spouse understands what your trying to say when you bring up any kind of helpful marriage tips! I think we will have a lot of fun planning our dates & following some of the other tips from this post. get ordained online
