Sociopaths in the news: Euthanasia

Euthanasia, I am guessing, is a morally fraught issue. "Mercy killings"? "Murder"? You could see how a sociopath might get confused about what is the correct response for this. Someone posted this CNN video link yesterday and I thought it was hilarious:

A Brazilian doctor appeared in court for allegedly killing seven patients to free up hospital beds in the southeast city of Curitiba.

Virginia Helena Soares de Souza recruited a group of doctors to help administer lethal doses of anesthetics, sedatives and painkillers, according to authorities.

In addition, the group allegedly altered oxygen levels for patients, leading to deaths by asphyxiation, police said.

Seven other health care professionals have been charged in the case.

Prosecutors allege de Souza pulled the plug on victims against the wishes of patients and their families, and in so doing broke the law. She did that to free up beds in the ICU and clear up the "clutter" the patients were causing, according to police.

People are outraged by this but not outraged with the Dutch practice of killing of all of their oldies?

  3. I've had two distant relatives euthenized by Dutch medical pragmatism and mercy in the last few years. One was 100 years old and had just had enough. The other had a return of cancer and was facing an agonizing and lingering few weeks before it would be over. They both went peacefully and happily at the time they chose to go. It was very civilized and dignified.

    1. be quiet...kaaskop

Everyone should be allowed to determine their last days. Any days ~

  4. I fully support euthanasia. Seriously, who fucking cares that this doctor peacefully killed some TERMINALLY ILL patients?? I mean the only problem is these stupid families who don't want to accept the fact that their terminally ill relative is going to die. It's better for everyone if you just let them die. All that anyone is accomplishing by keeping them alive is wasting resources and time.

  5. I am coming back from a faraway place that was terrible. I was lost, somewhere barren. I had to pretend I wasn't and this was almost as bad as being lost but being lost was worse.

I float imperceptibly above myself. I enter gingerly because I am porous. I don't want to overstep my bounds like an obnoxious house guest who won't leave, even when you give him a mountain of hints.

I see that it is somewhat safe to enter, nothing I can't handle. I settle in a bit. I go for my bathrobe and dirty slippers. I settle in the easy chair and breathe a sigh of relief. It has been a long time coming.

  6. Oops I wrote it wrong

  10. Who thought this video link was "hilarious?"

  11. I don't understand what's so bad about this... the patients were going to die anyway; delaying that inevitability is merely selfishness on the part of the relatives. Oh so you would like your loved one to suffer for another week? Month? Year? Just because you want to have the reassurance, self-satisfaction, or whatever, that you won't have to deal with grieving and dealing with their death? I honestly don't understand it. If you love this person so much surely you would want what's best for them instead of watching them suffer for your own comfort. To be honest she probably freed some beds that could be used by treatable patients... I think they are the priority in this case.
