Missing you

A lot of people ask me why a sociopath who has ended a relationship would still go through a great deal of effort to ensure that contact is never cut off completely.

When sociopaths are involved in any serious relationship, they become a special version of themselves just for that person. I think the sociopath's desire to check in is a desire to reconnect with that person that he once was, the same way that people might nostalgically flip through photo albums, even if the photos are only of themselves. Why to people go to a reunion? Is it really to catch up with old friends, or more to remember who they used to be?

And why can't we be multiple things to multiple people? I've been thinking recently whether I collect other people, or whether I allow myself to be collected. Even worthless junk can become priceless in the hands of the right collector.

  1. I can certainly relate to this, M.E.

I've been many different versions of myself for many different people. I, almost to an obsessive extent, keep in contact with the people that I actually formed a real bond with.

In contrast, there are people that I have spent an extensive amount of time with that I have no interest to keep in contact with.

From a detached standpoint, I cannot currently dissect into the meat of it to understand why I am this way, to keep in contact with some, and show apathy towards others. I do however know that those I do keep in contact with, it is a matter of fond memories, truly fond. Affection, possibly. Perhaps those people just meant more to me, and at a conscious level I cannot tell why.

Sometimes though, it isn't too important to know the why, but more that even with this disorder, Antisocial, that we can exhibit some remarkably social behavior.

Regardless of the true underlying reason, as I've said before, many times Effect outweighs Intent.

    1. I have a similar recurring experience. I am married and have a son. And it ends up with me playing these fantastic pieces of acting -- I am not a person, per se, but I am Husband, Father, Son-in-law, Brother-in-law, Worker, Colleague, etc.
I have a tendency to contact my ex-girlfriends and communicate with them. Sometimes to rile them up, sometimes to flirt, sometimes just watching them without them knowing.
I take a break from my various commonly played roles and step into another -- putting on another mask, if you will.
My wife finds out about it on occasion, and I wouldn't call it a fight that ensues, because I don't really fight with people. Either I win the argument before it starts, or I just avoid the whole thing. I have a sort of code that helps me avoid using violence so that I don't end up in trouble. Part of those guidelines are that disagreements lead to arguments lead to fights which leads to major inconveniences like jail and fines and lawyers and prison.
I enjoy the thrill and the hunt and the adrenaline, or whatever it is. However, I prefer to temper my urges with logic.

But I believe that this post here actually has helped me see things like that. I always knew the masks. I believe it was the photo album analogy that was the most helpful.

  2. This is interesting to me. My ex hasn't said good bye to me..in words anyway. His ex wife told me he will not say it because he thinks there is a part of me that belongs to him. Don't know about that though because he has gone to great lenths to erase me from his life. So I'm confused about it. I'm sure he deleted all my pictures and he had to get his truck detailed to get rid of my hair..I have lots of hair and it sheeds everywhere and he hated that...maybe that's just a domestic issue:) None of this should even matter to me anymore and yet I still think about him. BLA..I hate myself for this. I should be able to erase him just the same.

    1. I think it takes time to let some one go. I'm well aware of how painful it is to let go of someone, but then I remember how many people I've let go in my life, and I don't even think of them anymore. Their not even part of my consciousness.

It's freeing when you get to that point. (but at that point there's usually someone new to think about, go figure.)

  3. Maybe, we shouldn't hope to be able to erase part of our lives (part of ourselves). Instead, maybe we should hope to be able to recognize that there is something to be gained from all experience; the "good times" for the pleasure they bring, and the "not so good times" for opportunity we have to learn from them.

  4. i do not cut ties unless i am 100% sure that i do not need them anymore. i do not act in a way that will will curb how i feel i act in a way that will preserve what i want from that person. if someone is trying to cut ties with me i know exactly what to do to make that person stick around whether it be leave them alone for a week or kiss them right then and there......i hate when someone leaves me and i cant do anything about it ....that is when i am most bothered

  5. This makes sense to me. Often when I'm feeling nostalgic for a different period in my life, or somewhere I used to live (I've moved a lot), or an old close friend that I don't see anymore, the feeling is more like I'm missing myself. The other me that I associate with that time or place or person feels like a different person from my current self, and I would find it very difficult to let go of them.

  6. i miss people rarely and when i do, it tends to be long after their absence. it's usually kind of vague, a sort of nostalgia as someone mentioned, rather than actual grief.

My opinion of society is that it's sort of like sluggish, buggy, outdated software on your new computer. Problem is there are rarely patches and no one really seems to have an alternate product. It is what it is.

  27. I feel like the only reason I should worry about grammar in a place like this is so I am not picked apart by a group of sociopaths. Get over it. Grammar is far from a sign of intelligence. I am without a doubt smart. Just think for a moment (I understand this might be a little hard for you Postmodern Sociopath) about how a person would act if they wrongly accused you of something. They are now yours.

  28. I fail to see how proposing a hypothetical is a sign of intelligence. Also, I didn't call you out on your (terrible) grammar. That was an anon.

why are you driving recklessly? why are you getting caught smoking pot? why can't you smoke discretely like most of the rest of the world? if i were a cop i would arrest you for wasting my time when there are real criminals to catch.

  35. I am not trying to prove that I am smart by proposing a hypothetical because no mater what you will not believe me. There is a correlation between intelligence and sociopathy. sociopaths on average have a higher IQ if those are just letters to you I’ll fill you in that it is an acronym for Intelligence Quotient. Do you really know many sociopaths on a personal level? Are you like “who here is a sociopath I want to know because I’m one? Doubtful. I’m ok with taking this conversation out of the mud. As for UK dude. Do something else then. Don’t rely on us to be here for your amusement. You want help? Go masturbate or get drunk or something. Obviously you don’t care about me nor do I expect you to. I am not trying to prove my intelligence to anyone. You are just an illusion of a person. You are someone who I will probably never encounter again. What if you break up with a person but you still find them attractive? Do you cut all ties? I personally try not to but there are always different situations where it is beneficial to.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm sure that's how it is UKan. But when was the last time you did that? You've been with your girl for a while now right? I just have a hard time believing that a man would do that to a woman...any man over the age of 25 anyway. It's hard to understand that part of it...the end was like he died. Plus he didn't see me face to face to end it. That's another thing that makes me sick to my stomach. I guess he was too scared to do it the right way...don't know.

This often seems to be the case. I've met plenty of idiots who try to disguise themselves as intellectuals, simply by using a fancy vocabulary when in fact, they don't have a fucking clue what their talking about.

I view society as one great structure. It's a little hard to explain, but I don't even think of people as people, their all just a part of this structure. I don't see any of them as seperate, nobody is an individual, they all belong in the same category. All of the qualities that different people possess, which supposedly make them unique individuals are false and insignificant. Their simply fronts which serve the purpose of convincing themselves and others that they are special and worthwhile when fact, their not.

without your doubt you are. but how would we know? perhaps this is the best you can do?

  47. to Misanthrope-I agree that we live in a seemless whole and the farther we move away from that point the more individual we become.

Some people are special and people that can write well, not me, and express themselves in a way that people can relate to is a talent. I think some sociopaths can do that very well. Like Postmodern, for example, can do that because he reads more, that's usually why people can write well, so then he has absorbed more information. Now whatever he does with all that info is his business.

And I'm smart but who cares. My employer cares...but that's about it. I read a lot too but it's about the body and unless you're interested in that it would be tourture to read it. My ex bf said I was smart but not street smart...but that didn't keep him around....so there goes that theory. Smart nice girls don't get biker dudes!

  48. I hypothesize that sociopaths are sort of, Natural-Born Anthropologists, except their desire to learn and study is more a matter of survival and amusement than academia.

I look at people like I do other animals. When I see a particular behavior in an individual or a group that reminds me of a different type of animals, I have a good chuckle.

It's not that I think humans in general are below me, quite the opposite. I just don't think they're on their own Above Animal pedestal. It's not modesty, just being realistic.

While where on the topic of cigarettes,(sort of) does anyone else here smoke Marlboro Red? I like them and buy them fairley often because their strong, but I always get this nasty chemical taste everytime I inhale. Is it just me?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Marb Reds are pretty much the equivalent of what Budweiser is to beer. Cheap, not great tasting, nor very satisfying compared to many other brands that are only slightly more pricey.

Natural American Spirit products are nicer smokes and aren't a lot more expensive. If you want something upper-crust, you can look into Nat Shermans.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I have experience with.

class is a state of mind my friends.~

otherwise, i splash out on some marlboro menthols. lol.

    i'm not fussy.

    ReplyDelete
  82. american spirits are more expensive than marlboro reds but they taste much better and a pack will last nearly twice as long, partially because they don't have added chemicals to keep them burning quickly and partially because there is more tobacco to each cigarette.

    ReplyDelete
  83. They're bigger smokes and they pack more of a punch.

I can chain-smoke normal smokes with relative ease, but after two or three American Spirits, I am Done.

With Nat Sherman, it depends which type. Black & Golds are probably the smoothest cigarettes I've ever had the pleasure of smoking, and could smoke those all day long. MCDs on the other hand are lovely, but more robust and bold.

    ReplyDelete
  84. but I always get this nasty chemical taste everytime I inhale. Is it just me?

No. It's your body telling you to quit.

Do yourself a favor and kill yourself now because lung cancer is slow and unfathomable. After your lungs get invaded it will go to your brain and then your bones. Not to mention the phycological symtoms you’ll experience before you even get diagnosed. Forget sociopathy altogether. Smoke a joint everyday instead and then buy a new car with your money.

    Sorry couldn't help that.

I can take criticisms well that will enhance me and use them to my advantage without being hurt.

All though certainly not exclusive, it is a very common inclination in sociopathy. Realizing where you screwed up and adapting right away with not feelings hurt.

I was very sensitive when I was younger and now I've learned that learning something useful about me is more important to me than whatever bad feelings I get, especially if it’s true. That's how I have to be and it's worked out better for me. But I'm still bubbly, warm and very intuitive..no doubt. Just your type:)

I would think that sociopaths would not differ that much from the way that others handle relationship changes. When relationships change, there are some situations where you may feel the need to completely sever contact, and other times you don't feel the need to be that extreme.

I don't know about everyone else here, but TNP, don't ever pretend to speak for me again.

This 'us' and 'we' crap is so weak, especially when there has been no consensus whatsoever on opinion about Ukan. In fact, you are the only one with a username that has this opinion as far as I know. Is this an attempt at some fantasy gang-up-on-Ukan, since it seems you can't best him on your own? I hate that 'speak for everyone else' shit. So weak and cowardly.

Also, for a sociopath, you really aren't very good at reading people.

I've noticed you are quite pissy lately. Like you are trying to save some identity of yours that has been shown to you to be false. Or something, I don't know.

Although I do agree with one thing he said about ukan in regard to his attention seeking, I think he consistantly displays a blatant misunderstanding of ukans power and has probably never really know or been smart enough to understand a sociopath. He may be smarter than your average othead, but I think we all know even that is a stretch.

  170. A gallery of fools. How pathetic. None of you are a true sociopath. You're far too ignorant. Here we only have wannabes and never weres. That's quite obvious.

Allow me ,a true sociopath, to share with you the realities of this condition.

    1. A real sociopath never cares what others think of him/her. We only care about ourselves, what we think, what our opinions are and how much control we can exert over you.

Proving anything whatsoever to you concerning our worth? Is very much a joke! We could really care less what you think or feel about us or anything else for that matter.

    2. There are generally 2 types of sociopaths and some of us switch between the two: hyper intelligent and deeply ignorant. Allow me to explain:

We are about extremes. This behavior is exactly what attracts the types of people we find satisfactory. The very nature of our condition is extreme. There is no middle ground. We avoid it at all costs.

Here's why: The middle ground means mediocrity. It's not dramatic enough therefore leaving us bored and feeling impotent. Also because it is boring, uneventful and lacks excitement. It doesn't attract the appropriate types of pray.

So know that a sociopath acts either very ignorant OR very intelligent. In order to manipulate the pray around us. We are chameleons. We set traps using the bait our type of victims love. We're masters at figuring you out quickly and ,if you fit the bill, catching you for our pleasure. It's a game we must win and we love playing.

We choose the right types of pray. So down to earth, intelligent and truly grounded people? Are off limits! They're too self aware, questioning and assertive.

Flakes, empathetic and lost souls are often pray of choice. Egotistical idiots, co dependents, followers needing a leader, ignorant intellectuals. All of them prime cuts for us.

    3. You are here for us to use and eventually discard. When we're through? You're tossed aside like garbage. It's nothing personal (never is). We're simply done with you. We do not look back, we do not care and we do not even remember your name 99% of the time.

I literally cannot remember the names of nearly every single woman I've ever used. Only the current womans name means something. This is because remembering hers gets me exactly what I desire as of now.

    4. Real sociopaths ,like myself, are happy being a sociopath. We could really care less about how others feel. We enjoy our so called cold existence. It's all we know.

"Sociopaths really are hurting deep down inside and want to change if given a chance"? Nonsense!

True sociopaths don't want to change. Most don't even believe they have a problem. We love every minute of it. It's who we are. We feel in total control of our lives using this method. Anything less is unacceptable.

    5. We don't need you. You could disappear tomorrow and we could care less. We're not prone to being controlled in any way, shape or form. We are survivalists. Trust us we would live if the human race disappeared tomorrow. We are far too self serving and self absorbed not to. At the very least? We'd give it a damn good shot!

We don't need you in some round about way either. You're mistaking us for someone who gives a shit or has feelings like your own. Trust me we don't. We simply use you because you're nearby, you're convenient or we're bored and desire something you possess.

Otherwise we would go on without you just fine. Because ,again, we don't possess feelings like you do. Getting it now?

That's only the tip of the iceburg.

I've read just one post here which resembles that of a true sociopath. I'm certainly not going to share with you which one that is. Because lets face it: Why would "I" give "you" the satisfaction?
