Bystander effect

This is a follow up to the Yueyue video. I think that every culture is capable of horrible cruelties, in fact I think that the very institution of "culture" encourages it in ways (bystander effect) that make me sort of proud to be "anti-social."

And a lengthy explanation of why this is a result of some of our "pro-social" impulses:

Personally, I blame Burt Bacharach for all of this.  Instead of "walk on by" it should have been "stop to help."

  1. Indeed, Burt Bacharach the sociopath. How did I ever miss it? ~

  3. wouldnt it stand to reason the bystander effect happens because most people dont have enough empathy to love everyone indifferently? i mean if most people were empaths and loved the world then most peoples first instinct would be to help and the mob effect would take over and everybody help. its funny how badly most people just want to fit in.

  4. Most people don't stop because they wouldn't know what to do if they did. What if you try to help a stab victim, and you're so clueless you actually make it worse?

Everyone waits for someone who looks like they know what to do comes along. People like to follow a leader, so when things go bad they can point and say 'it was all his idea'.

  5. Or maybe they think they're being punked and some hidden camera is recording it.

  6. It's also because most people don't give a flying fuck about others. The world is cold.

  7. Social Psychology studies these phenomena. It gives a poor poor picture of man lol

  8. I suppose if someone does not have empathy, it is a retardation of sorts. I believe it can be overcome but the means are probably not what most people would do. However, I do not believe it is a fait accompli.

    1. If you don't have empathy, you do what needs to be done if it makes sense to do it and you have no good reason not to. That's what makes the 'empathy-challenged' among us useful. This has been covered in other posts, how surgeons, paramedics and the like need to be able to deal with a situation without being affected by fear, revulsion or empathy.

  10. To all the people who have kept me company here at SW. You can't know just how much this blog has done for me. But here is a small attempt at revealing that to you:

    1. what a blatant attempt to advertise your own blog, Eden. Fuck off indeed.

    2. Oh please. If you want someone to read your shit, point to it. Your other choice is to hope some add, depressive, manic, or stoned out of their mind, self involved reader here will think to click on a name just because it's highlighted?

      Delete
    3. Yes, Eden, but have the guts to point to your shit directly, rather than mask your intentions as an attempt to 'thank' everyone. It's that last bit that is cringeworthy as fuck.

    4. That wasn't me you stupid fuck. What is wrong with you idiots? If I have something to say about it, I'll say it as myself. If you have something to say to me, stop saying it under the cover of Anonymous. I do advertise my blog. Up in the forum, I make it obvious that I'm advertising my blog. Yesterday I made sure I put the post here as well, because I wanted to say thanks.

Yesterday my blog got 96 hits just from SociopathWorld alone. So you haters may not be commenting, but you sure as hell are looking. Aint nothing much going on around here these days anyhow.

My question to you is, why does it bother you that I'm putting my blog out there? No guts... no glory. And if you can't face me with a real profile name... you got no guts.

    5. Raven sometimes people argue with ech other and use you to defend themselves. It is not personsal.

    6. Raven when you say things like "ain't got no guts", and "sure as hell", I feel like I'm watching an old movie with a fast talking broad.

    7. Ha Ha! Want me to start saying, "Pal" and "Daddy-O", to complete the visual?

    8. Actually, yes, it was you. And what is this dramatic shit about ‘haters’? You are vomiting vile freely to whomever you like and now suddenly you see yourself as a martyr and you think people are out to get you? Are you really that delusional? Noone said there’s anything wrong with your own blog, you stupid cow. And noone hates you, just because they occasionally call you on your idiotic shit.

      Delete
    9. Actually, no, it wasn't. I don't see myself as a martyr either. I'm simply pointing out what should be very obvious. Saying someone has no guts, as an Anonymous poster? and also... using my name every single time someone contradicts you, or attacks you, is a cop-out. I may spew vile freely, all over this blog and elsewhere... but I'm using my own profile to do it. Something that automatically puts me above you.

And it's "no one"... not "noone". Fucking moron.

      Delete
    10. Oh, so it’s ‘no one’, is it? Do you realise how desperate that makes you look, especially when you have a post just a few lines above which is littered with retarded English?

Noone attacked me or you as far as I saw. Your name is used because you want it to be used by putting it out there. That’s no different than you seeing Erin behind every poster that pisses you off. Your need to see yourself above or below others is ridiculous, and stinks of hateful damage.

      Delete
    11. It's called slang. What was your excuse? I think the tone you keep using to address me, is interesting. It stinks more of hateful damage, than anything I've said today. I addressed that none of the anonymous posters are me. I stated the reason why I posted my thanks yesterday, and contradicted the statement that I was trying to be sneaky, while promoting my blog.

I do believe I am the person being addressed in this thread, am I not? So I am responding in kind. I don't see Erin behind every post, as you stated, and would Love for you to show me where on this blog I say that.

I also don't have a "need" to see myself as above you. So let me re-phrase this in a way that might penetrate your thick head: I see myself as having more balls than you, because I'm not using anon to disagree with what you say, or to put you in your place.

You obviously have a serious issue with me. Every line you write me is dripping with contempt.

      Delete
    12. You think my tone is dripping with contempt? That’s what I call an obvious projection. I’m not the one who picks on out-of-context spelling errors, sees myself as ‘automatically above’ someone else and compares the size of my balls like a 6th grader on the playground. It’s funny how the most abusive people are the ones who will get so sensitive when confronted about their rubbish.

But since you are so keen on the issue of anon status, should I remind you your selective use of your own name, e.g. when you were obsessively trying to get Monica to open up to you as anon and anon1, fully convinced that she was Erin, and after having trolled the blog for days with Erin’s old stuff. Not sure what this says about your beloved balls, but it does say something about your desperation and blinding rage.

To make the same point for the third time: I do not have a ‘serious issue’ with you as you say. I happened to call you on your bullshit, though I usually ignore it. It happens. It will happen again. Get over it.

      Delete
    13. You are calling me on bullshit that does not exist. The fact that you think the anonymous who answered you in this column, was me... is the evidence that you don't really know what you're talking about.

And why can't you call me out with the name you use here? Why are you hiding who you are to call me out? Are you the same person who tried to call me out up in the forum on my, "bullshit", by using UKan's name? Afraid?

The fact that you keep bringing up Erin, is very telling. Last I checked, no one here gives enough of a shit about her, to keep mentioning it. I'm not the only who's tried to call Monica out on being Erin. I'm certainly not the one doing it these day.
I posted all her shit because I was severley manic, bored, and because I wanted to prove her socio g/f was Maniazer. I have my own way of picking people apart for their lies and she had been sniping at me for a long time, before I did that to her.

anon AND anon1? Really? No. Are you going to call me Turk next as well? What about Extremity... is that me also? Oh... how about Sister Christian?

You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Everything you just accused me of is either an exaggeration, or a falsehood. That's me calling you on your bullshit. It happens. It will happen again. Get over it.

  12. It's more about mindfulness. Most "empaths" are so busy going about their stuff to care what goes on around them. In the US we have a highly narcissistic culture, so most "normal" people are pretty narcissistic. I think blunted empathy is a lot more common than people think, its just that people arent very aware, of themselves or those around them. Blunted empathy is probably an adaptation and it seems normative in this modern information age. People are becoming increasingly disconnected physically and emotionally as they become connected electronically.

That is rich, M.E: You, the sociopath, taking the moral high ground with respect to the bystander effect. Your indignant attitude could have been funny, if it were not slightly nauseating.

  16. True individual thought/action has a difficult existence because there is no reward outside of the pack. Pack rules and culture determines reward and punishment. This can be as simple as the deliberate misunderstanding/denial of ones self concept resulting in marginalization or alienation as punishment. The stronger or more energetic who thrives within the pack are usually rewarded and held up as examples of individuality.

  17. Is it bad if I laughed when I read the title of the first video? I can never tell what is acceptable to find funny or not. I find humor and sometimes even a strange satisfaction in seeing woundings or even deaths on video. I've been reprimanded before for remarks and other vocalizations of mirth during these times, anyone else have similar problems?
