Sesame Street on Empathy

I saw this interesting Sesame Street clip defining empathy. Curiously, they never define it as feeling what another person is feeling -- only understanding or imagining what another person is feeling. I guess we would call that cognitive empathy, perhaps even just perspective taking. If that is all that is needed, then I think each sociopath here passes the Sesame Street standard? If anything, it's the autism spectrum that struggles to perspective take?

      Silly old woman.

I simply posted an observation (aimed at no one in particular) that anyone who feels the need to use threatening tools in the bedroom, like knives, must be very insecure indeed.

The both of you jumped the opportunity to start defending the bdsm scene (I doubt either of you are actually into bdsm), even though I was talking about something completely different.

In so doing you just proved my point that your sex life is stale and that you feel the need to portray yourself as being more adventurous than you actually are.

  6. The Nonviolent-Communication people talk about empathy as being curiosity about the feelings and needs of other people. That is, if you want to understand what they want and what they are feeling, that's - according to Marshall Rosenberg - empathy - and they'd argue that's plenty.

Thich Nhat Hanh (a zen guy) is clear that a doctor doesn't need to feel upset and in pain in order to help an injured patient. If you, as a patient, go to a doctor and insist that he feel a certain way before he treats you, you might have to wait a while, because it might be a long time before you think he's feeling appropriately.

Autistes generally suck at paying attention to their feelings and other peoples' feelings, and they generally suck at articulating their needs or paying attention to the needs of others.

When I pay attention to my feelings, the negative ones are often boredom, desire or frustration. Often I'm bothered enough by some of these that it is hard to pay much attention to the needs of others, and then (perhaps due to the psychopathy) I'll misread them.

Eg if you talk to me I'll remember days based on meals. Girlfriend came over, had a great time, blah blah blah - but I remember her bringing ice cream, we ate it and really enjoyed that flavor. That's what I remember of the day. Other people don't seem to experience reality that way - except for the criminals where you ask, "how did the crime go?" and they say, "well, I remember that day I ate a cheese omelet and then ..." - that is, they remember the day based on the food.

So if someone like me or those guys tries to connect with other peoples' needs, I'll likely be thinking in terms of food, drink or other basic stuff, and when the person starts talking about how she is upset about some shit she read on the internet, or some gossip she heard, and I have a hard time relating to that. Because I'm thinking about how it would be nice to slip out and get some treats.

But I'm definitely curious and try to connect with the feelings and needs of others. Even if I don't share them at all. And generally, when I understand the feelings and needs of others, I try to give them what they want. Why not?

    1. When referring to the Rosenberg definition. Very often I want to understand what others want and feel, usually because I'm trying to understand why the situation matters to them so much, or sometimes I know I'm expected to do something about it so I'll try to figure out why they feel like that to be able to act accordingly. Would that count as empathy.

If we're thinking based on the video, very often I understand how people feel in a certain situation. Even as a kid, if we used the examples given, if someone stubbed there toe or lost something they loved I could understand how they feel. My question is, why should me understanding how they feeltranslate into caring for it. You stubbed you toe? Sucks, I know but, why should I care. Lost you favorote toy, or lost your favorite granny? Sucks but again, why should that affect the way I care?

Very often, I'll get irritated when people bring up deaths in their family or friends. I feel like the person is trying to twist my legs into acting a certain way towards them. Most often I'll just end up saying something like "my cordoleances" and B-line into another conversation to avoid having to fake any body language. Seriously, some people's reactions seem way too exaggerated.

Lol funny anecdote. I have a friend whom I suspected to be sociopathic, or something similar. We shared a friend in common, who was 2-3 years into a relationship with another one of our mutual friends, who had lost his cherished grandfather. Now that girl, the one I thought was a bit socio, had relatively loose legs and seemed to be trying to sleep with every guy in the group (She'd talk to them, keep it on the low, start sleeping with them, and while they were still speaking she'd start the same quest with one of that guys boys. Causing friction throughout the group). As soon as my boys gramps died (he had a few mental disorders including anxiety and depression, and was disheveled) she got closer to him and within less then a week had fucked him. Damn, did she split the group with that one move, created the biggest drama ever (even added she was in love with him and was falling apart, which I didn't buy for a second), then moved along quite fine while best friends had become enemies, long relationships failed, people moved out of state. Best blow I'd ever seen with such a simple move.

Do not start something off with 'this is a funny story'...especially when it's as funny as a chair in the face.
Still...you don't write like Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot (Google it Cunt, or is it Googlé en francais?) like Crawl over there, so I can at least stomach reading your drivel, to a point at least. What are you trying to prove? You keep coming out with these 'anecdotes' and then when they get taken apart you cry what a nice guy you are and don't want this hassle.
What do you and the elementary special needs class dunce think you're gonna get on here? Insightful sociopath views? Help understanding theory and practice? Try Wikipedia.
Crawl (or is it supposed to be Carl?) before you beat down on a youngster for being French, sort your grammar out, what's the saying? People in glass houses, are retards or something like that.

    4. Feel free to take it apart, most people on here seem to know one thing or another, or at least have an interesting opinion on the topics. Even Crawl's (Carl was a good bit, big ups) opinion on why he doesn't believe me to be a sociopath was valid. I don't mind learning, it's the only thing that's guaranteed to bring something new in life. The anecdote was about her and her empathy though, too bad you don't enjoy the irony .

The girl you speak of would fuck the football team - all your friends - and would undoubtedly fuck her own friends boyfriends when her girlfriends are not around. You just make sure to close your own legs and turn far away from this chaos.
      Two words. Shes trouble. :)

    6. She's one of my super close friends, and really easy to get along with. I see why so many guys actually do end up fucking her, if you don't know what she's going around doing, she's almost perfect. Ironically enough she's the one that kept coming to mind when I was tripping... I did manage to keep my legs closed though. I feel no pride in saying I was able to sleep with a girl who sleeps with everyone. Got her close to bed, then when she went for the kiss, I turned around and rolled one up. Never seen her face so red and pissed.

      Delete
    7. Eventually, you'll probably end up sleeping with her if she's your good friend and has already tried. Keep her as a friend but just know she'll be fucking your best friend too. Fuck friends... Your call. I advise you to not fall deep. But I think you already have from what you said. I guarantee she's of cluster b. If she's a chameleon type and can fit into any mold the guy wants and desires, guys will drop at her presence. She knows how to manipulate good. You will become intoxicated with her presence. Yes you will become intoxicated.

I know of a girl exactly like this. She fucks anything that gives her attention. If she does not get it, it's her quest to receive it at any cost. She's easy to get along with, yes, seems just to good to be the perfect girl in that moment of course.... but deep down she's toxic. My other two girlfriends are dumb enough to let her back into their life. She's broken marriages. She then gets the guy and leaves them once the marriage dissolves. Takes the money and runs to the next quest. If her girlfriends find a new love, her claws dig deep when their not looking. Mickey Mouse drama. Them the chase is gone.... she just wanted to break the marriage or relationship up and have the guy choose her not the wife or her so called friend.

She has never been in my domain nor will she ever walk foot into it. Ever. I will be nice to her when I bump into her but I read her good since high school. She's still the same old, same old. If she ever fucked with me I would have no problem to put the bitch in her place once and for all.

She will play you. :) good luck with that. As long as you keep it for a fuck and aren't hurting your best friend she's fucking -- all is good.

Get an std check afterwards. Because her cunt is real rank from where I stand :)

Bless her dad , died of AIDS.

    8. Nah, had a vision of her (One of my first few trips, and the one that came after the time I tripped with her. Yep, she literally appeared) while tripping and sorta over thought it... then it sticked for the next five or six trips. Everytime I would think about it, I'd convince myself she'd appeared as a message cause I was in love with her and she was the one for me. After the trips ended, I'd feel like a fool. Besides those episodes, I really don't get attached emotionally. I have thought about being friends with benefits though, the dude whose gramps died told me she was great (plus he wasn't into her for love, but more for getting his grampa out of his head). But yah... I don't do cesspools, and, like you said, I don't want to have to worry about STDs.

      Yes, that is so.

I don't get it... please elaborate.

Sigh. Ok, but only because I’m bored, and procrastinating about work. :P

Of course you don’t get it. Your intellect does not appear to be your strong suit. So I will elaborate for your reading pleasure.

You make completely asinine statements about how you don’t understand why you should care about people’s stubbed toes, and indirectly present this “confusion” as evidence of your sociopathy. You call people whom you consider your “closest friends” “cesspools”- and this, after someone criticizes their behaviour, thereby demonstrating how easily influenced you are by the views and opinions of others.

You claim to be “emotionally detached” after going on about how ashamed you were of the sloppy feelings you tried so hard to repress, but which came out in drug-induced visions, because you are trying too hard to be something you aren’t.

This all leads me to deduce that you are a superficial person who prides himself on being mean and passive aggressive. And I think you try to glorify and mischaracterize these common, ugly traits with a label you think sounds “cool”, in order to bolster your ego and feel special, when in reality, you’re just a garden-variety jerk.

Is that clear enough for you?

    18. A,
She IS one of my closest friends, I didn't mean to call her a cesspool, I meant I don't do genetic cesspools. In my group, girls sleep with the same guys, and guys with the same girls. Not very interested in that, I keep my options outside my friends. Now that we got that cleared up, I wouldn't call someone that because they sleep around, that'd be hypocritical.

Yah those feelings were repressed my ass, and I can see you've never tried and don't know much about psychedelicsunless (I also have repressed feelings for the songs of birds and wind through trees, cause that gets me super turned on when tripping). I've also had a vision of getting seduced by one of her best friends, Mahakali and Kim Possible, I suppose those are repressed feelings as well.

I don't think what she does is wrong per se. I just don't see the appeal in sleeping with a girl at least half of my friends have been with (I've slept with girls that beat her score but, they weren't friends). But anywho, now that I've given you updated material, why don't you give it another go.
      ___________

      Ve,

Hurricane Matthew was a joke, at least in Miami. I could have slept ourside in a tent. I don't know what "6toed Cats" are o.o... nor do I know what the Hemmingway house is. I do go down to the Keys once in a while, usually end up at the beach the whole day (have a friend who knows an awesome surfing spot), then at bars or restaurants.

No, I've only been to Tennessee, Colorado, Germany, and France from that lot. I do plan on road tripping (in every sense XD) around the US before I leave though.

    19. Yah those feelings were repressed my ass, and I can see you've never tried and don't know much about psychedelics

It is you who doesn’t appear to know very much about psychedelics, for they can indeed trigger repressed feelings. A psychedelic agent can render you much more emotionally vulnerable. A simple Google search will reveal a ton of anecdotes about individuals uncovering repressed emotions and memories whilst under the influence of LSD, as well as some formal studies on the subject. What clued me in to the fact that your experience was significant is that it happened repeatedly, juxtaposed with the shame you felt afterwards.

As for your petty meanness, susceptibility to the influence of others, and desire to prove yourself, Crawl already did an excellent job of drawing those things out. Your words speak for themselves.

I've also had a vision of getting seduced by one of her best friends, Mahakali and Kim Possible, I suppose those are repressed feelings as well.

Woah. That’s sooo deep, man! :P

Look, frenchie. How, exactly, does spending all day in a drugged stupor, fantasizing about Kim fucking Possible, and hanging out with a bunch of losers who share each other’s trailer trash, NOT make you a self-absorbed, superficial, escargot-scarfing prick, leading an inane existence? XD

Franchement. Tu vas faire dur en tabarnack si tu continues encore longtemps sur cette voie-là.

You’re not 15 anymore. When are you going to become a man?

      Delete
    20. A,
Canadian? True psychedelics can do that for you but, remember you also pick up other people's vibes, and she only started appearing when we parted after I tripped with her few times (same with her friend I mentioned). Don't recall any shame though, just couldn't figure how I came to those conclusions when the trip ended.

I genuinely don't think I'm mean though, people will tell you I'm super nice, just blunt, and cold hearted, and a bit of an asshole when you put those two together. But nice.

Lmao, you think Kim is weird. I once watched porn while tripping to see what the experience would be like, shit haunted me for the rest of the trip. I wouldn't call it a stupor though... I have a pretty high tolerance and mental stability, people don't usually realize. I do love psychedlics, but most of the times I meditate on them. However, shrooms is a 6-9 hour trip, and Lucy 12-16, so yah oytside of meditation shit happens. Amusement parks and music festivals... you can imagine why I'd trip.

I don't care much for what people think a realistic life is, hope I never have to live that way. How would ypu describe a man?

"The feeling that you care about and are sorry about someone else's trouble, grief, misfortune, etc. : a sympathetic feeling." (Merriam-Webster)

      ***************

To sum up the differences between the most commonly used meanings of these two terms: sympathy is feeling compassion, sorrow, or pity for the hardships that another person encounters, while empathy is putting yourself in the shoes of another. (Source: Google)

      *******

I think that in the first part, when the guy pretends he stubbed his toe, the monster demonstrates sympathy.

In the second part, when the guy pretends he's lost his teddy bear, and the monster says it makes him want to cry too, he is demonstrating empathy.

Sociopaths do not necessarily have trouble with the former. But the latter we do lack, almost completely.

    2. Neuroscientists have recently discovered that humans are wired to experience empathy through multiple systems of mirror neurons in our brains. These mirror neurons reflect back actions that we observe in others causing us to mimic that action in our own brains. When we observe someone in pain or when we are with someone happy, we experience that to a certain extent. These mirror neurons are the primary physiological basis of empathy. They create a neural Wi-Fi that connects us to the feelings of people around us.
Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by ‘a lack of empathy and remorse, shallow affect, glibness, manipulation and callousness.’ When individuals with psychopathy imagine others in pain, researchers have found that brain areas necessary for feeling empathy and concern for others fail to become active and connected to other important regions involved in affective processing and compassionate decision-making. A September 2013 study from the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago published in journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found the neurobiological roots of psychopathic behavior. When highly psychopathic participants imagined pain to themselves, they showed a typical neural response within the brain regions involved in empathy for pain, including the anterior insula, the anterior midcingulate cortex, somatosensory cortex, and the right amygdala. The increase in brain activity in these regions was unusually pronounced, suggesting that psychopathic people are sensitive to the thought of pain but are unable to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and feel that pain. When participants imagined pain to others, these regions failed to become active in high psychopaths. (https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-athletes-way/201310/the-neuroscience-empathy)
I think this is a pretty good explanation....

  14. my boyfriend of a 4yr just broke up with me and am 30 weeks pregnant.I have cried my self to sleep most of the nights and don’t seem to concentrate during lectures sometimes I stay awake almost all night thinking about him and start to cry all over again.Because of this I end up not having energy for my next day’s classes ,my attendance has dropped and am always in uni and on time.Generally he is a very nice guy ,he ended it because he said we were arguing a lot and not getting along. He is right we’ve been arguing during the pregnancy a lot .After the break up I kept ringing him and telling him I will change.I am in love with this guy and he is the best guy I have ever been with.I’m still hurt and in disbelief when he said he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards me anymore that hurt me faster than a lethal syringe. He texts me now and then mainly to check up on how am doing with the pregnancy,he is supportive with it but it’s not fair on me, him texting me as I just want to grieve the pain and not have any stress due to the pregnancy.i was really upset and i needed help, so i searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Unity can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and i did it then he did a spell for me. 28 hours later, my bf came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my bf are living together happily again.. All thanks to Dr Unity. If you have any problem contact Dr.Unity now and i guarantee you that he will help you.Email him at: Unityspelltemple@gmail.com ,you can also call him or add him on whats-app: +2348071622464.

I'd love to but it's my aunts, and everything points to me, i gave up drinking at the weekend ever since i moved in with her, i get violent streaks when i drink, this one time, me and my buddy went to this small park after drinking, we saw this homeless guy sleeping on a bench, i knew right away i had to do something to him, i took the glass bottle i was drinking and smashed it across his face, we kicked him a couple of times and ran off, it was an amazing rush, i am constantly doing things like that when I'm drunk if you aren't you are missing out.

And you, can bring me to my knees
      Again
      All the times,
When I could beg you please-
      In vain
      All the times
      When I felt insecure
      For you
      And I leave
      My burdens at the door

      But I'm on the outside
      And I'm looking in
      I can see through you
      See your true colors
      'Cause inside you're ugly
      You're ugly like me
      I can see through you
      See to the real you

      All the times
That I felt like this won't end
      It was for you
      And I taste
      What I could never have
      It was from you
      All the times
      That I've cried
      My intentions
      Were full of pride
      But I waste
      More time than anyone

      But I'm on the outside
      And I'm looking in
      I can see through you
      See your true colors
      'Cause inside you're ugly
      You're ugly like me
      I can see through you
      See to the real you

      All the times
      That I've cried
      All this wasted
      It's all inside
      And I feel
      All this pain
      Stuffed it down
      It's back again
      And I lie
      Here in bed
      All alone
      I can't mend
      But I feel
      Tomorrow will be okay

      But I'm on the outside
      And I'm looking in
      I can see through you
      See your true colors
      'Cause inside you're ugly
      You're ugly like me
      I can see through you

Fixing my accents is a bit redundant though, after I mentioned the lack of those, coulda spared me that...that being said my French teacher would have killed me XD, especially for mistakes like plural, "se", and Quebecois. The rest is pretty much differences in expressions, and writing colloquially.

    26. Actually, I misconjugated the verb "to deduce", which is an irregular verb in the 3rd group, so it is (yet another) exception to the (ridiculously complicated and onerous) rules of verb conjugation in French.

I should have said: "je l'ai déduit" - with a "t", and not an "s", unlike most verbs conjugated in the second person singular and masculine, with the auxiliary verb "to have".

Moreoever, "Quebecois" should employ the lower-case "Q", for the names of specific places are not capitalized in French.

French grammar is a wicked, uptight, bitch of a mistress that will always find a way in which you are wrong. xD

Which is pretty much the only reason I stop by here. I find sarcasm pathetic though, but then you've always done sarcasm, when A used to shut you up, you used to throw some sarcastic shit, and a 'well I only wrote it so you'd say it' type attitude. Pathetic.
But...you've out done yourself now, I wasn't looking at who you might actually be because I didn't think someone with your apparent intellect would stoop to impersonating someone else...even to the point of altering your type to camouflage yourself. Reading back, the amount of times you write 'you' shines through and then the 'u' just makes you look a komplete kunt.

    5. "...you think we're awesome."

Sorry to say, but if that's really what you believe, you're in for a world of disappointment.

Trust me when I tell you that not once have I even tried to be an asshole in any of my interactions, you're just so deeply in denial that you take everything as an affront.

I guess you'll just have to learn the hard way.

That's also why I told you that I'm not going to bother with you, you're already a mess.

      Delete
    6. Why are we in "for a world of disappointment" because we know how awesome we are? I can't speak for Swop, but if my confidence is an impediment, it has never hindered me before.

Why do you think insecurity is a prerequisite for enjoying the thrill of sexual power exchange involving sharp objects?

And how is playing with knives in the bedroom "something completely different" than bdsm? Do you even know what bdsm is?

I've said before that I'm not into any "scene". What we do is private.

Are you retarded, or just lacking very basic reading comprehension skills?

If you want to spar, at least take your head out of your ass. As it stands, you're just making yourself look like more of a judgmental, uptight ignoramus with every comment you post.

For someone who claims that you "won't bother with us", you sure are going out of your way to be provocative.

But that's ok. We know that this is your awkward way of asking for it, masochist. You're obviously very repressed. I, for one, am happy to indulge your unwholesome desire for verbal assault. We aim to please. ;)

      Delete
    7. A, I didn't know that you and Swop were the same person.

You're obviously desperate for attention (which is understandable), that's probably why you're trying to be as provocative as possible.

I've told you before, I really don't feel like entering a contest of wits, or otherwise a shit flinging contest with you, not today and probably not ever.

    8. Then why do you keep posting such odoriferous crap?

If you have any problem contact Dr.Unity now and i guarantee you that he will help you.Email him at: Unityspelltemple@gmail.com ,you can also call him or add him on whats-app: +2348071622464 ,Maria Alexander,London, UK.

  28. What are your opinions on bullying? Personally, I think bullying is good for society. Bullying encourages the receiver to defeat the bully and in doing so, evolve and become stronger like the ancient Spartans. The hardest, toughest people I know, were all bullied in early years. Bullying is a dirty word now because we have become so weak and comfortable and lost our ancient warrior roots.

Abuse is different and unnatural. Abuse is when the receiver of the abuse has his/hers hands tied and can't defend themselves. That is cowardice and abuse, when you offer someone no escape plan. Abusers are powerless losers.

    1. I tend to agree with this.

We now have college students who require "trigger warnings" and "safe spaces" when they are exposed to big, bad ideas, ffs. It is utterly contemptible. More importantly, it is stifling free speech.

I saw an excerpt recently in which some shrill, shrieking feminist insisted that someone remove a hat sporting a political sentiment she found offensive. She then proceeded to try to remove it from his head, because he "wasn't allowed to wear it on campus", and told the "offensive" student that he had to follow her to the director of student affairs' office, because the administration had been notified, and agreed with her that he shouldn't be allowed to wear the hat. Ha!

I was incensed. At that age, if someone had tried to forcibly remove an article of clothing from my body, I'd have punched them right in the face. There's your fucking "trigger warning". :P

We're raising a generation of pansies.

Not in my house. Not on my watch.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, but you're an asshole. :)

I'd buy them food, and give them an employment reference.

There should be facilities set up to put homeless people to work doing menial jobs in exchange for food and shelter.

Homeless shelters are useless, because they're just a band-aid, enabling people to continue in a pattern of learned helplessness, and to be a drain upon society. Set these people to work, so they can EARN their right to a spot in a shelter. Give them the tools to lift themselves out of squalor, not hand-outs on a silver platter.

These thoughts have been percolating in my mind for some time, and I have good ideas on how to set something like this up.

Maybe it's time to embark upon a new project.

    4. At my pre-k/kindergarden and elementary school the teachers encouraged the students to deal with bullies on their own (unless shit got out of hand obviously). If you snitched on someone because they were bothering you, or because they hit you a little, both of you would end up in detention. The bully obviously for instigating, and you for being a snitched. That way students would try their best fixing the problem before resorting on telling a teacher. Plus, most parents sided with teachers on that view, no one wanted to raise pussies or tattle tells. Sure there were a few fights, a couple did need to be broken up by teachers but, no one ever got serously injured, and most got resolved before a teacher got involved. Many fights even resulted in strong bonds of respect between the students fighting. I made one of my best pals in one of those fights, we broke it off when we saw a teacher coming, pretended to be playing around so she'd leave us alone, then cracked up together cause we got away with it. After that our differences didn't seem to matter.

My problem with shit like that in the US is that you usually find people abusing someone way smaller, or ganging up on one person, and the crowd just pulls out a camera instead of making it a fair fight.

Totally agree Ti, my husband and I would bully the bullies that singled out on the weaker, smaller, and innocents. If someone doesn't stand up for what's just, than who else. It's easier to follow the crowd rooting them on.... but it takes courage to stand against all its folly.

The other day I was at the Post Office, and there was a homeless man sleeping inside, on the ground. My first thought, was that I should let the postal employees know. Then, I decided he wasn't bothering anyone, and decided not to. He was sleeping on the ground, with his backpack nearby. I tried to be quiet, so I wouldn't wake him up. I could tell, he hadn't had a shower, in quite a while...

      Brace myself and let go,

Oh, take a chance, let your body get a tolerance,

Palms up, Im trading em (trading em)

Im the oracle in my chest,
Let the guitar scream like a t,
Sweat it out, shut your mouth,
Free love on the streets, but
In the alley and I aint that cheap, now

I dont care what you think,
