This is an old comment from UKan that I've been meaning to give its own post. It describes why psychopathy is not necessarily maladaptive, but rather can be quite fantastic:
See here's the thing that bothers me with people who write about psychopathy. They display all the traits of a psychopath as a weakness. As if all the psychopaths out there are doomed to eternal suffering in a emotional void. In a psychopaths point of view it is quite the opposite.
Its all about perspective really. Robert Hare, which many of you know to be the worlds leading expert on sociopathy said he believes he would find more of a percentage of psychopaths in the cut throat business world than in prison. That doesn't really sound like a disorder to me. The hype over psychopathy is over a small minority of sexually violent predators, most of whom went through serious child abuse.
My lack of impulse control allows me to take risks others could not. In business its all about taking risks. If you don't have what it takes to make quick decisions you are fucked. Especially my business.
Constant boredom is a great thing to have. It keeps you busy and enables you to multi task. It sets you apart from the rest.
Being grandiose can be self actualizing. We belong in roles of power even if we have to creste it from thin air. If you make yourself look great and you are so convinced that others around you believe it to be true, does that not make it so?
A psychopaths temper is quick, sharp, and its also effective. Why not get it all out there instead of bottling it up till you have to go cry to some therapist. If I don't get my way I'm fucking angry. Guess what? Most of the time I get my way. Who wouldn't want that?
Psychopaths don't have shallow emotions they just have different reactions because they lack empathy. Is rage not potent? Is possessing someone not passion? I feel want. I want it all.
Which brings me to this pirate shit. What a cheeky way of portraying a psychopaths constant hunger for more. Some people are satisfied with a mediocre existence. Not the psychopath. This constant need for more gets you more. Funny how that works. Who wants to employ someone who is satisfied over someone who will never be? Dissatisfaction can make one ambitious.
Like I said its all perspective.
well, a sociopath would say this.
ReplyDeletemost people disagree for a reason.
Can someone explain why sociopaths are so lonely to me, please? It's come up several times. I just want to understand. Does the feeling ever go away?
ReplyDeleteTheir social contacts go to sleep, that's why.
ReplyDeleteshayden, when did that come up?

ReplyDeleteWhat? I never said it came up in this article.
ReplyDeleteI never said I was a sociopath or psychopath.
Anyway, I thought everyone was suppose to be different. Using that kid of logic, shouldn't everyone be lonely?
do you lump bpd in there, David?
ReplyDeleteWoe betide those who are tormented by Loneliness and Boredom, the greatest sin and evil of our times. No wonder those who can comfortably come to terms with these (including socios) are deemed as deviants.
ReplyDelete@GagReflex
ReplyDeleteSince when is boredom or loneliness a sin, dumbass?
Don't listen to Dave. He's a friendless prostitute, that's why he's lonely. Sociopaths aren't lonely. People are an activity and it's boring when you've got nothing to do. Boredome is the feeling that never fully goes away, but it's not exactly soul crushing. It's more like the immediate feeling that you just have to do something. If you can't make friends easily even when you try chances are you're not a sociopath. The differences between sociopaths and regular people are what's described in this post. You don't feel cut off or isolated from others you feel like you've got an advantage over them.
ReplyDeleteI think Ukan makes some valid points.
ReplyDeletePsycho's/socios are so often portrayed in a negative light because of peoples perspective/moral inclinations.
Put in a different context a psycho/socio could be seen as a go-getter, or someone who strives for excellence.
Depends on the situation or scenario that has arisen prior to the comment.
A CEO of a company isnt going to hand over the reins to some piss-livered little twat who is going to wreck the company within 30 days. He will look for someone with 'bottle'...someone whom he see's/perceives as having substance , a go-get-em attitude and the ability to exercise business savvy...whatever that may relate to within that corporation/business.
some psycho's/socio's fit that bill nicely...so why the hell would that be seen as a negative?.
There are people who are NOT socio/psycho who also display some of the traits of them but they are seen as 'driven'..perfectionist..or things in that vein.
Put in that context, it just comes back to social perception of a "label'.
If I were known in the community as a hard assed, driven businessman who got results and who made his company thrive and flourish, I would seen as a success....but if the label psychopath were added to my name...public perception would very quickly pin me as a nutter or a person of suspect morality/ideology who should be steered well clear of.
Unfortunately the minority of those people who have fledged into murderous ultra-violents have given psychopaths and socios a really bad rap. Ukan freely admits he is quick to anger and not adverse to using violence, but he isnt about to go and fuck up his power base by eating someones liver with a nice Cianti. He also states that he has a problem with impulse control, but compared to some of the loonies who slaughter, eat, maim, beseige and generally terrify the population , Ukans impulse control would appear to be rather nicely shielded by his 'crew'...his lifestyle, his rep within said lifestyle and he obviously has a good enough handle on it to make sure he doesnt get spun into a jail cell every few months.
Nor is his impulse control so bad that he is ruining his life with it. He's spotted a potential problem and rearranged his defenses so it doesnt turn into a liability.
That to me shows considerable smarts, and if he is able to live the lifestyle he has, within the confines /expanses of his capabilities then why would he see his view of the world as anything less than bloody marvellous?.
Compared to some people, yes, by certain standards we ARE morally bankrupt. By other standards we are not. Survival of the fittest has always been a deep primal contender within any society, yet society seems to balk and choke when the fittest turn out to be 'different' than what they deem to be appropriate.
Small wonder then , that socio's/psycho's detest people as they do , and the societies they live within. They know they are stronger, have reinforcement of that fact every day and see the effects of their handiwork (good or bad) constantly.
You employ a dog of war for a certain reason. If you are foolish enough to treat it as a lap dog...then you deserve the large bite on your face!.

ReplyDeleteOh, god. So even if you get a job, have a successful career, plenty of toys, you'll ALWAYS be bored? Like, no matter what?
ReplyDeleteAnd I already understand the being-a-friendless-loser-isn't-sociopathy-it's-pathetic thing a while ago.

ReplyDeleteAnd,
ReplyDeleteJesus Christ, David. You're the one with the word 'Socio' in your username you, useless moron.
Did I hear someone asking for context?
ReplyDelete@shayden
ReplyDeleteNot all of us are constantly bored. Some of us tend to stay busy, active so that doesnt become an issue.
Speaking only for myself, I can spend days doing very little, with no human interaction...but that only came with training. A socio can learn to moderate annoyances.
But some just go beserk if they even THINK about being bored. Some of that is simply a difference in makeup/natures. We are not all little clones of a textbook (haha) socio/psycho.
shhhhhh wheatley...if you speak too loudly the parsnip will turn up and all will be ruined!
ReplyDelete"who's the one paying for a fuck and company around here?"
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I think you're about to tell me.
"Oh, god. So even if you get a job, have a successful career, plenty of toys, you'll ALWAYS be bored? Like, no matter what?"
It acts as encouragement and keeps you active.
@Lycan
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't say that the term 'morally bankrupt' is subjective. Wjat is subjective is wether moral bankruptcy is a problem or not.
Oh! I mean:

ReplyDelete"Give a man a fire and he may be warm for the rest of the evening; set him on fire and he will be warm the rest of his life."
ReplyDeleteHaha. I like that one.
He will be dead...
ReplyDeleteIf you are in a profoundly lonely moment because there is everyone, but no one you can relate to or no one who can connect with you, then loneliness is definitely a state of your mind. You are simply pining for your pristine perception of how things in that moment should be.
Arrrgh! it's like playing a game where you have infinite lives but the rules and characters are all already known to you. So what can you do? You could redefine your role or create some new scenarios..Wait I think Nietzsche might have said something like this.
The wretched loneliness and disconnectedness he must have felt, that drove him to do what he did, as thoughts of his perfect Nordic sanctuary being crowded by immigrants with their other realities gradually saturated his mind.
"When work feels overwhelming, remember that you're going to die."
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Africans were so alienated and in need for just about any role to stimulate interaction that they obliged their hosts in the plantations to play masters and slaves..;)

ReplyDeleteYeah, i get that, but the bible is the bible, innit? So taking it literally would also mean obeying it's laws, ridiculous and hypocrytical they may be.
According to the bible, if you don't scream loud enough when you're being raped, you're just as bad as the rapist.

ReplyDeleteOr this;
ReplyDelete“What if a demon were to creep after you one night, in your loneliest loneliness, and say, 'This life which you live must be lived by you once again and innumerable times more; and every pain and joy and thought and sigh must come again to you, all in the same sequence. The eternal hourglass will again and again be turned and you with it, dust of the dust!' Would you throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse that demon? Or would you answer, 'Never have I heard anything more divine'?”
But I agree with the other one as well.
Yup, and you should be able to buy people from other countries as slaves, be put to death if you wear clothing made of two different materials, be put to death if you plant two different crops on the same field, not go to church if you don't have 20-20 vision, not get your hair cut if you're a man (and be put to death also) and sell your daughter into slavery.
ReplyDeleteLook it up, respectively in Lev. 25:44, Lev.24:10-16, Lev. 19:19, Lev. 21:20, Lev. 19:27 and Exodus 21:7.
It's funny how almost all theists are like that one guy that tattooed Lev. 18:22 on his arm (thou shalt not be gay), whereas a couple of verses later it clearly says you can't get tattoos.
Oh well, I guess that:

ReplyDeleteWhat are your thoughts on Top Gear?
@Shayden
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the best shows on earth, partly because of the humour (which is amazing, don't get me wrong) but even more so because they highlight one of the main problems of current media. It seems that every time Top Gear mentions a minority, it's deemed discriminatory. The PC-crowd has started to confuse indifference to ethnicity with racism, and that's the biggest load of shit I've ever heard.
What's also in Top Gear's favor is the fact that they don't approach their audience as being idiots. They demand a reasonable amount of intelligence from their viewers, something that at least 95% of current shows (I'm looking at you Britain's Got Talent and your fuckload of spinn-offs) don't.
So yeah, I'd say it's like Monty Python with the randomness turned down a notch, and cars added. And being like Monty Python is not a compliment that should be taken lightly.
I forgot to mention; Jeremy Clarkson is on my list of possible 'minor-closet-sociopaths'. You should read his columns. The reasoning he follows is reminiscent of Freakonomics.
ReplyDeleteNah. He's more of a narcissist.

ReplyDeleteYesterday I spoke with a top published anthropologist from Japan whose been doing more than a decade of research of the peoples and tribes in my region. He said that the lines of ethnicity is fast disappearing with modern development here.
Although I agree that for all practical purposes, ethnicity and vernacular-ism will remain only as touristic symbols or as anthropological records of what existed before. In the interim, it will be one hell of a mad mix of pseudo political polarities and a nightmare to sort out residual prejudices and stereotypes.
And boy, what a juicy opportunity for internet fear mongering and exploitation of people's idiocy. Maybe I should start gathering the best followers to start my own elite cult with all the tricks I picked up from here.

No, wait. Doesn't that make God an asshole.
ReplyDelete"Yeah, sure, I smote (smit, smitted) all those cities, but I'm a good guy now, I swear."
Nope. I speak a little though.
ReplyDeleteAnd Shayden, haven't you heard? Rules and laws are all imaginary! Life is all just one big game of monopoly and everyone seems to have forgotten that the rules everyone follows are all just made up, and could be changed at any moment. You know; to mix rthings up a bit. :)
Too bad. I was going to cut off my dick so I get my free ride into heaven. He rescinded the offer, or so says Erin.

ReplyDeleteWell the New Testament is a higher law than the Old Testament.It is the Law of Love and Grace.
ReplyDeleteThat is why Jesus was hated.He was a radical dude :)
That sight'll put the fear of the Almighty in your reckless young hearts I'll say.

ReplyDeleteHi Darling.
Aww You even have a pet name for me--the Parsnip *bats eyelashes*
So... God can kill, and order people to kill,
ReplyDeletebut all in all he's perfect, right?
The religion of contradictions and of Law of Love and Grace.
This makes so much sense.
When I love someone, I tend to kill them, too. Only I use a hatchet instead of mystical powers. (And in case you can't tell that was sarcasm, I don't want to be hunted down by the FBI and YES I CARE.)
Sociopaths do not have ambition. Ambition involves the ability to make realistic long term goals, and commit to a consistant long term vision. Sociopaths are impulsive and cannot do these things.
ReplyDelete@Do You Have to Follow the Law Anymore?
ReplyDeleteWhen you have received God's love you want to honor him and so you want to follow His Ways which are shown in the Old Testament with the Ten Commandments.However,His Ways are too perfect to follow and you will always fail but you try so you can love Him back for all He has done for you.
However the dietary laws etc are abrogated -totally.
A Born Again Jewish Person of which there are many does not have to follow the Kosher Laws or anything like that.
@Refudiate
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your Ph.D in psychology, again?
If you're worried about the FBI, I propose that everyonehere post their name, adress, phone-number, IP-adress, social security number, pedigree, a picture of your fingerprints, a picture of the iris of your eyes (bith left and right) and lastly, a photograph of yourself, in which your face is easily recognizable.
ReplyDeleteWho wants to go first?
@Erin
ReplyDeleteDoes being a hit-man make you closer to God? Or what about nuclear bombs?

Jesus wasn't hated. He was just a tool, martyred to ensure the continuity of Rome-in-decline, as the global promoter of a new religion. Brilliant strategy but functionally pointless! The sentimentality of a ruthless narcissistic empire at its end, doing anything to be remembered. Too bad for Jesus. And wasn't he scared too? Just a radical dude..
ReplyDeleteThats really awesome david, I'm happy for you. Bit no one cares how many dicks you've seen.
ReplyDelete@Shayden Very clever of you to point out that I am not an authority on this subject. That is true, but Ukan isn't exactly an authority on business success either, if I remember correctly he is a drug dealer.
ReplyDeleteI read the book Snakes in Suits recently. I know you guys hate Robert Hare but it makes a good case for the difficulties that sociopaths have in the business world. They even did a study on a bomb disposal team to find out if the fearlessness of a psychopath would be a useful trait on the job. It wasn't, the lack of fear merely made them careless.
People who are successful in business often repress their emotions by necessity. They make cold, ruthless decisions in spite of their conscience, and they remain calm despite the fear inside. It may seem psychopathic but it is not the same.
@David
ReplyDeleteCatholic parents didn't pay attention to it because masturbation is considered a serious moral disorder to them.
You guys don't know the story of Jesus.You believe what you are told by the establishment churches---Nien.

@Erin (although Eris would be a nice pet-name, now we're on the subject)
If I were to create a universe, I would make it mandatory that everyone living in said universe gathered once a week in a building dedicated to me and remind me of how awesome and magnificient I am and how pathetic and worthless they are. Sound familiar?
The point is, that if you consider god to be omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, omnibenevolent, impotent and all other kinds of 'tents', you will never understand why het let little Timmy get run over by a combine harvester, even though Timmy never murdered anyone.
It's the ancient "If he's all powerful and all good, why doesn't he stop evil?" argument, really.
It's safe and easy now

ReplyDeleteThe things that spaths can do can be great. Buildings are built, empires are conquered, businesses flourish - and your personality makes it happen. And it is all because you have no illusions, no remorse, no tossing and turing over these hard choices. But the net effect is not always positive. Other people are devastated emotionally and many who work hard are and who are effective are left with nothing except bitterness, shock, and mental distress. People who otherwise could be high functioning contributors. So, yes, you do some good, and make things happen, but was it a net positive thing? YOU succeeded, but did it make the world better? Are you really that satisfied? I think the spath goes around doing what they do, rationalizing behavior (because, hey, I made that business succeed), making themselves happy momentarily, but the net-net is very negative. The trick then is, how can you bring all your good qualities, without leaving all the bad? How can you make your net-net positive?
ReplyDelete@Erin
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah. The Garden of Eden.
Because that isn't a contradiction in itself.
'Okay, you aren't allowed to eat the fruit, but only if you eat it will mankind be able to move forward' and such.

ReplyDelete@Eris
ReplyDeleteYeah but that wasn't the question. That '2060 Chiron' has only been 'just' (1977, more like) discovered but has some 'deep astrological' meaning could mean a couple of things.
1) The entire solar system and everything that orbits the sun, is designed to be used as a means to determine one's personality, so are the stars and constellations we can see.
2) Before Chiron was discovered, people were unable to feel any kind of deep pain, because it couldn't have been astrologically determined.
3) Astrologers just make all of this up as they go along.
The problem with 1) is that there are no set rules that determine what celestial body is used and what isn't. There are (as of 2000) a 100.000 categorized and named asteroids in the asteroid belt alone. Those are only the ones we can see from here. I imagine there are billions of asteroids the size of marbles, and probably septillions of asteroids the size of grains of sand. To say that all of these can be used to define someone's personality, let alone the future, would be very difficult to prove.
But that's the asteroid belt alone. On the outer-rim of the solar system, there are billions upon billions more, not to mention everywhere else. If you would count all of the dust floating around in the solar system, and you'd try to impose some sort of meaning upon all of them, you would run out of langauges long before you've gotten even half of them.
Then there's the problem with comets (which can leave and enter our soalr system), the moons of planets, the rings of plantes (which are completely made of rocks and dust too), you'de have to define were our solar system starts and stops, and you'd have to account for possible teapots floating between earth and mars.
And I know what you're gonna say: "Not all matter in the solar system has meaning." but in that case, the astrological meanings are given to planetary bodies not because they represent that meaning in some way, but in the order of their discovery. And you'd also think that in a solar system specifically designed to match the personality of someone, every single piece of space-rock would serve some kind of purpose, and that there wouldn't be some arbitrary human imposed limit to how big one must be to matter.
*huff huff*
Part two is obviously rubbish, and part one, well, I'll leave that up to you. :)
@Shayden Cynical:
ReplyDelete1. like or characteristic of a cynic; distrusting or disparaging the motives of others.
2. showing contempt for accepted standards of honesty or morality by one's actions, especially by actions that exploit the scruples of others.
3. bitterly or sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, or pessimistic.
@DavidSocio01 I don't have a personality disorder. I'm not trying to antagonize you people. I'm just confused. According to Shayden I do not understand why these people are here. I guess that is true. You guys treat sociopathy as if it is a philosophy of life, and not simply a medical diagnosis. I don't get it, if you want to sort out your problems, it would make sense to pin down your problems as exactly as possible... not to adopt a label that is inadequate.
If Shayden is right about you guys not being sociopaths... It's like a bunch of people with crutches have formed a support group for people with full body paralysis. I mean, it doesn't make sense to me. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just wondering what is going on around here.
ReplyDeletefor all you idiots standing up for psychopathy, spend 50 years under an oppressive dictatorship then you will realize that there is no place for psychopaths. psychopaths are the cancer of humanity
In all likelihood a psychopath would be running the oppressive dictatorship and you would be the one slaving away. Everyone has a place. Yours is servitude to people like myself.
@shayden
ReplyDeleteI suggest you read through everything on here, as well as doing a stack of Internet research. Even go on love fraud to see the mistakes other "sociopaths" made and how you can avoid them. The path of self-awareness is confusing but you'll find your feet eventually.

ReplyDeleteWow, you defined a word. Congratulations, now you know how to use Dictionary.com.
I'm so proud.
@David
ReplyDeleteAs I've mentioned before, I'm almost 17, and I'm two years younger than the average class-mate. :)
Why would I be so desperate for people to like me?
*it*
ReplyDelete@Eris
ReplyDeleteAwwww, so I typed that rant all for naught? You could at least humour me and read it, I put so much effort in it. :)

ReplyDeleteOk I will later *urrrgg boorring*
What sort of direction? What makes you conclude that what you have/are is wrong in the first place? What are you so determined hide, the fact that you are looking for direction or that you don't have a solution?
ReplyDelete@Seth
ReplyDeleteRight. Done that.
@Gag me with a spoon
ReplyDeleteI'm determined to hide any problems I have from the people around me.
Direction in how to cope, hide it, and blend in.
What's wrong? Plenty, but I don't feel like vomiting my life's story right now.
@Eris
ReplyDeleteYou don't see me complaining that I have to read all of your comments, and you can't even form a proper sentence. :)
@UKan
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they even bothered to read your comment.

ReplyDeletethat is great
Shark-metaphors eh? In that case, "I can sense someone's central nervous system using my Ampullae of Lorenzini."
ReplyDeleteHow does that sound?
So hostile. Maybe you are hiding because it might not amount to anything more than the angst of a high school kid with slightly above average sensitivity?
ReplyDeleteSure is scary especially here, with the whole safari watching over anything you say and how you act. The only thing I see rather obviously is your insecurity showing through your faking tough.
I'm so hurt.
ReplyDeleteIt just brings me to tears-
Nah. I didn't sleep at all. I'm bored, and I'm trying to keep things curt so we can move onto something more interesting.
@Shayden
ReplyDeleteWe already have
@Gagreflex
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, that's what I expected would happen to me when I started commenting, but this site's been perplexingly mild to me.
@Cake
ReplyDeleteSorry. I can't eat gluten. Thanks for offering, though.
I like refudiate.
ReplyDeleteDon't go by what anybody says on here. Doubt everyone. People should be challenged on the shit they write on here. Let's get to the truth.
Long term planning is difficult for me. I'm really good at flying by the seat of my pants and being positive that I will get my way. On my phone I got this app called sticky note or something like that. I made just general goals that I want. Things that are tangible. I saved six months rent and bills so I have a backup plan. Right not I'm saving for two Jets Skis.
If I don't focus on those small goals I get aimless. I'll do my routes still, but I will blow all the money on frivolous ways of entertaining myself, which only last a moment till I'm bored again. After that I will have to buy more stuff to entertain myself or half ass some hobby that takes dedication. It's hard to focus sometimes, but it's not impossible. I've already knocked out three of my goals in the past six months.

it's because you haven't lied about yourself or acted like an idiot, wheatly.

ReplyDeleteChoke on it.
No, friend, I leave choking on words to people like yourself.
@David
ReplyDeleteYep, especially when you factor in no eggs, no milk.
Next year I'm going vegan. Just for kicks.

ReplyDelete"I smell blood in the water"
Yeah, you're right. Your one-line ego trips are fun for the rest of us.

ReplyDeleteAgain, that's not what I said. You told me that even planets and asteroids that are discovered get some kind of meaning assigned to them. And who do you think discovers them? The astrologists? Don't be ridiculous.
And the sentence thing: punctuation dear, punctuation. When you've got a hold of that, start worrying about grammar and spelling, and then about actual syntax and making sense. English isn't even my first langauge, and I can out-grammar you.
And what does 'Wheat Thins' mean?
