There are times where i dont feel anything towards anyone, meaning i can hurt a person (physically and verbally) without feeling anything. I lie a lot as well, sometimes just for fun. I like to pretend a lot. Like im either shy or outgoing, egotistic, lonely. I dont really know which is the real me anymore though. I dont feel much shame and guilt bc i literally just turn them off. I could if i wanted to but i dont want to. I think i developed this bc of my parents. They arent really that harsh but they say/used to say very hurtful things to me all my
Life so i learned how to not care. As for sympathy, i sometimes feel it towards people close to me and i also do feel love and care towards other people so i dont think i would be classified as a sociopath. But i do munipulate and lie to get what i want. Honestly ive never felt guilt after lying i just know people do so sometimes to my friends i say, omg i felt so bad. But in reality i dont care. Same with sympathy. There are still times though where i can be very kind and thoughtful. I sometimes do pretend im feeling something towards a certain situation to be considered normal. I dont like what i do because ive kind of lost my true self in all of this and i want to be me but i dont know who that is. It is quite the opposite - there is an abundance of it. That being said I can see why you're perplexed. It is a unique state sociopaths inhabit.

The impressionability is related to the mask, and paradoxically how the mask influences the sociopath. Sociopaths are not impressed/influenced primarily through their emotions (because they have little), but they are by their mask. Take a look at her blog post regarding hating narcissists, and how the sociopath thinks in the example:

http://www.sociopathworld.com/2008/08/why-i-hate-narcissists.html

You can get so caught up "being" a sheep, and can understand what the sheep experiences, that you can "appreciate" it. This isn't to say you sympathize or relate to the sheep, but you can work through its thoughts. After a while the actions and responses become so quick and natural, and like all humans we can often not be self-conscious (what psychologists refer to as being metacognitive at that moment), that a sociopath can temporarily exist in a pseudo-sheep state. It happens to me all the time. It's only when I find myself making a misstep that I become self-conscious again, remember that "I'm not actually a sheep".

You might find that bizarre or unnatural, even hard to relate. But it exists, and it is as natural as breathing. Mind you it takes many years (at least for myself, it wasn't until my early twenties that I cared enough to focus on that particular development) to get there, but it does eventually happen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628748600098131100.post-52275673450320590572014-01-26T15:57:32.204-08:002014-01-26T15:57:32.204-08:00M.E.- What do you mean by "Impressionable&qu...M.E.- What do you mean by "Impressionable"? If you mean it literally as "easily influenced because of a lack of critical ability", I can see why psychologists are surprised that at least a high functioning sociopath would possess this trait. People are impressed upon, and thereby influenced, primarily through their emotions. Do you see what I'm driving at here? The difference with sociopaths though is that it less about an internal discovery of who one is, but an external molding to blend in with the public. Unlike empaths, sociopaths don't have a set and defined sense of self due to a lack of several mental and emotion components. Some have speculated the chameleon effect is a predatory instinct, others have said it is a survival instinct. We adapt to where we are. Our brains have a plasticity that other do not. That's why we change our behavior according to the social situation that we find ourselves in. I don't know if we were born with shape shifting abilities, but we are adapters. So why wouldn't we adapt our adapting skills to other situations, such as social ones? My reason for this is someone like James Fallon seems like he's been very consistent in his identity. He has also been given a lot of latitude to "be himself" and had a mother who was very supportive/nurturing as part of an overall happy childhood. Most budding sociopaths aren't as fortunate. Most learn that they will be punished/shunned/ridiculed if they don't appear to have adopted the behavioral norms of whatever group they are part of.

But that doesn't mean that the shape-shifting quality is irrelevant. Far from it. It might prove to be an important marker for clinicians to determine the level of hostility a patient experienced during formative years as one clue that may be helpful in unpacking the genesis of pathology within an individual's character disorder.onewomanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11320973006497715467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628748600098131100.post-75498974486282283562014-01-25T04:36:04.372-08:002014-01-25T04:36:04.372-08:00You hear people in the borderline communities on f...You hear people in the borderline communities on facebook talk about chameleon behaviors a lot. Some of what goes on in the borderline communities on facebook is an interesting phenomenon in and of itself. It has evolved in to almost a religion, and the people most influential in developing that atmosphere have no background in psychology. I think the difference in the chameleon behaviors seen in bpd though is there is a neurotic, fearful, desperate need to be accepted by someone that they like. I don’t think they’re always really consciously aware that they are doing it, but what an incredible skill, and the part of the brain that is involved in this must be very well developed because they can pick up on behaviors, likes, interests, etc. very quickly, and take on these traits. I can also see how this ability would give them advantages in various social situations and occupations. Pointing out the positive of this behavior on facebook’s religious group unfortunately had many of them upset. They’re obsessed with pathologizing everything, and trying to figure out a way to fix themselves rather than the possibility of conceptualizing some of this stuff a bit differently. Telling them they share similarities with sociopaths would probably cause an uproar in that group, but there really are so many. The difference in the chameleon behavior though is sociopaths seem to often be more consciously aware of taking on others traits, and using it to manipulate others. I find it analogous to facial feedback - a neurological phenomenon where, for example, by externally smiling or laughing (without feeling happy or humored) causes you to feel happy or humored after the fact. The effect actually becomes the cause. I have found the axiom holds true for myself at a given moment. While I might not internally feel happy or humored, I find my perceptions tweaked by the expressions when I fake a smile or laugh. Perhaps this effect is amplified by how easy it is to smile or laugh, becoming both fake and real (yet not genuine). Perhaps it is also why it can be so easy to self-deceive, especially for sociopaths who do not identify and admit the truth of themselves to themselves, because of the instinctual/reflexive nature and level of external quality the mask has. It can be highly reactive and accurate. It can be, in a word, "photorealistic" to both the viewer and the wearer.

The adaptive quality of the mask is second-nature. Its refinements and details are drawn by who I am around. The longer the exposure - the longer the time observations are quickly seen, processed, and implemented into the mask - the more photorealistic it becomes. Eventually the mask starts to develop a passive manifestation, where the input of cold observation through the mask to the actual consciousness begins a process of temporarily tweaking internal perceptions and eventual reactions. It's neither a comprehensive nor permanent change - it is both selective and transient. But it does manifest after a while with someone, particularly with individuals who have a strong sense of self. It eventually disappears, as quickly, easily, and in totality as a popped soap bubble. But for that moment it exists, the bubble does distort light at its periphery.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628748600098131100.post-50006593506077427722012-05-31T00:16:43.624-07:002012-05-31T00:16:43.624-07:00It's called "cowardice," and it'...It's called "cowardice," and it's not a cluster of symptoms, so it can't be defined as a personality disorder.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628748600098131100.post-83490230525311270392010-12-30T16:45:28.748-08:002010-12-30T16:45:28.748-08:00btw, i found that smile test difficult too Medusa....btw, i found that smile test difficult too Medusa.
