Cairns and Port Douglas in three efficient days

I'm a scuba diver and wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef while it's still there, it's been a childhood dream of mine to hold koalas, and I had like 4-5 days to kill between weekend appointments with people, so I headed up to the northeast to Port Douglas. I stayed at the Port Douglas Motel which was kitschy, cheap, centrally located, and great.

First, heads up. I feel like this is really not well publicized, but although this is a tropical part of Australia, you cannot really safely go swimming in the ocean, or even 100% safely hang out on the beach near bush or near the water particularly at dusk or dawn because (1) there are saltwater crocodiles and (2) all of the summer is "stinger season" in which you can get stung by all sorts of animals.

What are marine stingers?
Stingers are potentially lethal jellyfish that typically inhabit the waters off northern Australia. The most feared is the box jellyfish or Chironex fleckeri. Distinguished by its large box-like bell and trailing tentacles, the box jellyfish is responsible for about 80 confirmed fatalities in Australia since records began in 1883. The jellyfish's bell grows up to 30cm in diameter and extrudes about 60 tentacles, each measuring up to three metres in length. The Irukandji jellyfish, by comparison, is a pint-sized predator with a transparent bell measuring just 12 to 20mm and four small tentacles. There are numerous Irukandji species and two recorded deaths.

I literally only found out about any of this as I was take a shuttle from the airport in Cairns up to Port Douglas. By the way, I really recommend staying in Port Douglas, which is a charming tourist town, rather than Cairns which feels a little like not a place for tourists at all. My shuttle driver was talking to some locals about the two most recent crocodile deaths from the past 6 months -- an older woman who took a wrong turn while on a walk around her retirement home and a German young woman who was know to like to skinny dip.  For the elderly woman, apparently the family of the deceased pleaded with authorities to not kill the animal. Let's not make this a tragedy of two deaths instead of one!

Day one I checked in with my dive company for the next day then rented a bike and went to the Wildlife Habitat, which is a little small and a little kitschy, but also sketchy in all of the right ways like holding koalas and other animals and feeding various animals in a little bit of a free for all. I biked back to the motel via Four Mile Beach (pictured above). The sand is so packed, you can just bike on the beach itself, and probably safer with the crocodiles. At the Port Douglas end of Four Mile Beach, there's a little hill you can climb up to an ok lookout.

Day 2 I did a three dive tour to the outer reef using the ABC Dive Company, which seemed the most reputable and the smallest groups? The trip was nice, there was a shark apparently that I didn't see. I did see a lot of great coral, rays, an eel, a ton of little jellyfish. Basically it really did look like Finding Nemo, which I didn't expect for some reason. I think I had forgotten that Finding Nemo takes place at the Great Barrier Reef, so of course all of the same fish would be there.

Day 3 was not good. I had heard that the other great thing to see is the rainforest. Now this is like my third or fourth (fifth?) time doing tours of the rainforest, including the heart of the Amazon as well as other places in central and south America. I've done a ton of jungle tours and safaris and this one not only sort of sucked, it felt like I was trapped, which made me super grumpy. Daintree Discovery Tours. It was so bad that I was all set to post a bad review of it online, but then I started reading other one star reviews with my same complaints (basically just driving around in a car all day doing nothing of interest or no value added from the tour), and the response from the company was mainly to address the complaint that people had that they could have done the trip much cheaper themselves. The company responded by saying it would actually be around as expensive to do it yourself. But really, I just sort of wish I hadn't done it at all. My general impression was that either Daintree is not that cool of a rainforest to see, or no tour company has been able to highlight its charms well. It's sad, because apparently it is the oldest rainforest in the world? There were interesting things to see, I guess, but like 1-3 hours worth of interesting. Also, same notes as my post on Sydney about the service industry being a little lackluster in Australia. It felt like there was a lot of phoning it in going on.

Day 4 I did this Kurunda package that was pretty good, something like this in which you're basically just shuttled around on a bus from attraction to attraction. There seems to be no difference in the tour operators, so just choose the cheapest one that includes the little destinations you want to see, e.g. yes or no on the butterfly sanctuary. Rainforestation is worth seeing, so is the train and the skyrail. I had this terrible customer service encounter with a skyrail person who was yelling at people. I almost lost it for a second, and it reminded me that I'm for whatever reason most likely to lose my temper while traveling.

I did learn something interesting on the rainforest tour. Mangrove trees (pictured above) can grow in salt, but salt is still poison to them. They adapted a special root system that keeps most of the salt out, but salt still gets in. To keep the rest of the tree alive, the three designates a "sacrificial leaf". It puts all of the toxic salt in that leaf until it is full and then the leaf drops off. The leaf turns yellow.

I thought about how James Fallon has argued that sociopaths exist in society to essentially take care of the "dirty work" that is necessary and unavoidable in our society, work that give normal people PTSD if they had to deal it themselves. Kevin Dutton has made a similar argument about sociopaths being great soldiers, surgeons, and spies, I believe. Anyway, thanks to all of you sacrificial leaves out there taking one for the team!

    1. I disagree. Sociopaths can be team players if it benefits them. Majority of the time sociopaths end up being leaders in a team environment also. I believe sociopaths would make excellent soldiers. Most if not all of them also remain calm in fight or flight situations.

    2. And most socios have severe problems with boredom, like cleaning dirty items or sitting around for hours just waiting, watching. Good soldiers?

    3. Yes, isn't that what snipers do? Wait and watch their prey? Uniform will always be immaculate ;)

We can do this all day love...until of course you bore me

    4. Some of us have great patience. I can do the same job all day long and don't mind hunting like snipers do. Depends on the payoff. As an artist you have to cultivate a great deal of patience to perfect your art. Of the sociopaths I know some excel in patience and team things some prefer to lead, some prefer solo only. We exist on a spectrum and our life experiences shade what we can do and what we enjoy. I work well on teams if I look at it as a machiavellian challenge. I work well on teams if I can lead. I very much mentally enjoy working with people because I can measure my success against the rest of the team. At the same time I sometimes prefer to work on my own. I would seriously suck as soldier though I do have a problem with authority and enlisting traps you.

    7. I have read Machiavelli but a long time ago. I should do a reread. Puppybasket because my usual handle of BasketofPuppies was taken. It is Big Bang Theory Joke. Big mean dude hacked Sheldon's WOW account. They find where he lives and go to get his stuff back. Knock on the door, Dude asks "Who is it?" SHeldon goes "YOUR DOOM", Raj is like "No dude. WHat kind of idiot would answer the door for Your Doom." SHeldon thinks a few secs, knocks again and when asked who it is says "Basket of Puppies". This works for me on a lot of levels because if you are named Basket of Puppies everyone thinks you are a harmless sweet person when in reality I am thier doom.

I mean it is weird but it works even in real life. The grocery store I shop at has a rewards and they ask for your phone and your email pulls up. Every damn time the cashiers see Puppybasket they get more happy and friendly and relaxed around me. Works even better online. People are preprogrammed in weird ways. I like to take advantage of that.

Isn't the basic point of a soldier, to like kill people? Brass tacks like. It's known that a normal everyday average Joe will, if the opportunity arises, when put in the position...not...kill the enemy, but to fire slightly off target purposely. Put a sociopath in that position and he'll relish in it.
I'll concede that Bellas snipers make up about 2% of the army (the British Army now of course, where its a team effort, not a contest for longest shot [regardless of side of target you friendly firers you, garrr] or prettiest gun photos, so the boredom is a factor of course, but that goes for all the army, just because the sociopathic soldier is a tad anti social, doesn't mean he won't join in a good old game of Backgammon with the rest of the squad now does it silly anonymous?
You're spoiling for a fight, and that's cool, I get that, but, and it's not a very significant but...you're a twat.

Why would it be dangerous to have a mix of personality disorders anyway? Surely it happens everyday an people don't get like, what? hurt and shit?

Many ignorant people thought that the odd woman had dragons as parents (and herself had a dragon-personality). But the fraud, the odd woman, did not think real dragon-people would show up. They did. 12. I don't know, M.E. I still think the target state should be one in which psychopathy / sociopathy is understood as a valid paradigm of human experience in its own right.

"Sacrificial leaves" is an interesting concept from an abstracted view of the human species and that's ok. It may be true that sociopaths / psychopaths are over-represented in the population of "dirty workers" but it's still likely statistically true that plenty of neurotypicals perform those tough / unwanted jobs too.

I still say be bolder than simply trying to convince people that sociopaths are really ok within the current norms of society. I know acceptance is really important... I just feel very strongly that people can accept the truth. And that truth is the whole picture of what psychopathy / sociopathy is.

    1. Lots of baloney concerning psychopathy. Like the "fact" that socios (in general) are first in line when warcrimes & covert dirtywork are looking for eager hands to do it. In reality average people with everage grades in school & average political views are the ones that do these things, as long as there are some recognized authority with stern voice & peer pressure from other average people exists. Bright psychopaths are sensitive when it comes to being used as pawns: they don´t like that.

  15. Aw, I like snuggly wuggly stuff. I don't, I really don't, I have an inbuilt nuclear reactor that tries it's hardest to melt me when the Mrs gets too close in bed, I can handle it for about, I dunno, six seconds, then I feel the need to explode. Heat makes me incredibly irritable incredibly quickly.
So no, to the somewhat odd question of cuddles.

Worst shit I've done? Yeah, I'm not going into that on here as said Mrs sometimes reads these and can get a bit, well, sickened by me.
But I did let slip an old fantasy of mine, and she was repulsed, but she knows of it so fuck it.
    Wound rape.
    I fantasise about wound rape.
Which is basically rape, but, raping a wound made with a knife.
So like, cutting a thigh or stomach open and just going to town on it. A femoral artery trying to push you out could be interesting too.
I'd also like to cut out a piece of my Mrs, cook it up and eat it at the dinner table whilst she does that wonderful mouth thing she does, under the table as I feast on her.
But don't tell her, because I'm working on this one at the moment and don't want to scare her off.
I know they don't really constitute as violent fantasies, but apart from the obvious pre-meditated murder we all expect to be strewn about on here, it's what makes my likkle dimples pop.

And if they were alive during it, well now that's just a Brucey Bonus right there.

I'm insure why violence would make you laugh? But each to their own. You ask why does hurting people make me laugh, then follow it up with I don't hurt people, but the notion makes me laugh.
      Make your mind up.
Go out and smash some random innocent up, proper lay the boot in to them and see how funny it is, for you at least, I'm gonna go for, about as funny as Bella, but I could be wrong, I've never found it funny, deeply, deeply satisfying when you emerge on the victorious side, but not too amusing in truth.
I guess a tickle fight would be funny.

  18. Robert Hare studied psychopaths his entire life and found out that psychopaths didn't make good soldiers at all. They were too impulsive and erratic. They'd often get killed in a stupid way that could've been avoided by being more careful.

    1. Seems quite possible. I am stunned at the things **-* does sometimes. A few years ago, his engagement in a particular risky activity landed him in hospital for weeks with a condition that could have killed him. Despite - and perhaps because of - the presence of even greater risk signals this time around, he chose to engage in the same activity. And he's a now a single parent.

Why does he do this? Because he likes it. Why didn't he learn? No non-psychopath would consider it "rational." But we know psychopaths don't learn from adverse outcomes. They simply don't have the emotional response to these situations that facilitates learning. They haven't felt the impact.

I reckon psychopaths are compelled by threat / opportunity. These situations really do pose questions of our conceptions of rationality / non-rationality. Most behaviour is compelled; emotions in neurotypicals are the compelling vehicle. So what compels us? Brains are always statistical machines, wired to pursue or avoid environmental elements based on our own predilection for risk and our own learnings of what constitutes risk (the interplay between our neural configurations and the environment.)

I bet you weren't expecting North's Conjecture of Human Behaviour in a Paragraph. I wasn't planning to write it but there we go. Thanks for inspiring it.

  19. I think I'd make a pretty good soldier. I started studying a martial art recently, and took to it like a fish to water. I am advancing quite rapidly because I am in excellent physical shape, and motivated to train. It is a fantastic outlet for my aggressive tendencies, and the highly structured, disciplined approach helps me where I am weak. (I.e: impulsive and lacking in consistency.)

I am training several times a week more than most of my classmates, because I am driven to excel. I *love* the sense of power that training my body hard to master a set of combat skills confers. I love that I am training my body to become a lethal weapon. I should have done this years ago.

I have come to realize that I need a steady stream of sports to stay sane, focused and reasonable. I pour all of my risk taking predilections into the extreme sports I practice, and now that I have added a martial art to my roster, I feel complete.

    1. I get that. I love being physically capable, knowing I'm prepared for anything.

I'm going back to rugby, too. An old teammate said to me "you must miss tackling people! I don't know how I could live without tackling people." Exactly.

Did you ever play rugby, A?

    2. Question...I know I've got lots of them. Are there any researchers out there that are completely unbiased in regards to this topic, and approach it from a completely objective perspective, and they don't really care if psychopaths are all bad, or if they have something positive to contribute to society? Seems like everyone who writes about psychopathy is biased in some way. Psychopaths will always see themselves in a positive light, and people that have been victimized in some way (Hare) will always see them as being bad. This is the technical nerdy scientist in me, but I just wanna see the objective data.

      Delete
    3. What’s objectivity? We all try to understand our own experience.

The best we can do is abstract to a species-level viewpoint and describe what is rather than what “should be.” That’s difficult, but achievable if we step outside the extant conception of the human condition. That needs to break to accommodate the psychopathic paradigm of human experience because it is considerably different.

Is anyone else looking at this? I like thinkers such as Robert Sapolsky, Oliver Sacks (deceased) and Elinor Greenberg, but none of these focus on psychopathy.

    4. When I collect quantitative data on a dimension of behavior it's pretty objective. Hard to argue with numbers.

      Delete
    5. It's an older work but masks of sanity is rather objective. I have a break down of multiple sources in my book, and M.E. does the same.

But masks is good, if getting outdated.

    6. We all ask questions from our own standpoint though. Objectivity is in framing. Numbers only operate in context.

      Delete
    7. Numbers are the easiest subjective lie to make. There's why you need good CFOs sand accountants in business. Take a finance class and listen to all the, "it's complicated" when they mean we shadowed and highlighted what we wanted.

Fiction is still fiction, no matter the medium used.

  20. No, I've never played rugby.

I'm not fan of team sports. I like to do my own thing.

Sparring is an exception. I really enjoy competing against an opponent, one on one. This is my favourite part of the class.

I've surprised the higher level belts on account of my approach. I don't let up or hesitate, preferring instead to use the limited repertoire of skills I've acquired relentlessly, aggressively, and instinctively. Overthinking leads to defeat.

As my Sensei is fond of stating: "the best defense is a good offence."

    Indeed.

    I couldn't agree more.

What art you doing? Obviously a Japanese one, or your sensei has some issues.

Have a look for and a read of Watch My Back by Geoff Thompson, proper eye opener on the martial artistry, and a damn good read.

One thing I will say if I may, try not to be taken in by all the Eastern Master bullshit, get what you want out of it, train to maim, not to bow to idols and "really get" all the Japanese inspirational mind and body quotes.
I'm giving combat jujutsu a bash at the moment, same old stuff, but with quite a street element so I'm enjoying it.

It was worth a shot I guess.

I'll let the 'girl' get a few notches under her belt first, she sounds repetitive and predictable. Yes...like me [rolls eyes].
And, also sounds like she's being suckered into the world of bullshido. (Bushido is like, the study of Japanese martial arts, or something like that, I don't really pay attention. Much like you're doing right now I suppose).
But yeah, I'd watch that too...just so I could gaze lovingly at my narcissistic self really.
And to watch A kneel at my feet in pain of course.

What position did you play? You're quite dainty and petite in my head, so I'm quite intrigued by the rugby.

    3. Im confused. A is a female or no?

      Delete
    4. A is female. Maybe Swop got excited. He's been known to do that from time to time.

Swop, you are the first person on the planet to think me dainty :) **-* says I'm "powerful." Me (on top)

I've played everything from 4 - 15, plus hooker in 7s. I'm best at openside flanker and had most success there, but I also loved playing flyhalf, fullback and scrumhalf.

      Delete
    5. I do have a tendency to get excited I admit, but I don't see where I denied A's femininity?
      In this post at least?
Was it the "I don't like hurting women" line? Because that was a joke, I love hurting women.
      Bloody British humour.
      Anyone for tea?

Powerful eh? Well he could be talking about your mind, or, I dunno, after toilet stench for all you or I know. So dainty you shall remain.
Don't spoil this for me North!
I've seen yourself and A in many a pillow fight, and there's lots of daintiness ok?

I played outside centre in my hay day, and on the wing after injuries, well, near enough sidelined me (that's a joke too anon...the wings run up the sidelines mostly). See...you were never front row...too dainty North!

Six Nations start tomorrow too baby! Bring on da spoon

      Delete
    6. "Too dainty" from a
      winger??

It's okay, keep your fantasies though. I'm pretty sure I could take down A. And you. I often dream about taking random people out on the street.

My favourite thing on the field is dump-tackling props because it's so easy. You just have to lift their centre of gravity a fraction and start the backwards momentum for them. Sooner than you can blink, they're on their back with your shoulder under their ribs.

Tell us about your injuries. I've played both rugby and Oztag with ruptured ACLs. Quite a few concussions. AC joint, sternoclavicular joint (hurt the most), sternocostal joints, fingers, thumbs. No broken bones, though. All soft tissue.

  28. I never claimed to be anything but dainty North, I'm barely 180lbs soaking wet. But quick. Well, used to be.
I've no doubt you could take me down...on a rugby field. Try that shit off pitch and they'll be signalling the ref for a stretcher for you. No, wait, that makes no sense whatsoever. But you get my jist.
A lot of my injuries came from heavy contact sports and a long history of having my petite derrière smashed into gym floors.
But I'm one of them stubborn mules who believes doctors are for sick people, so my body's a bit of a wreck by my own doing really.
But fuck me it looks good.
    I'd fuck me.
Anon- I've no doubt A would kick my ass, it's known that trained women fighters always, always have the upper hand over trained male fighters, it's just common sense and basic physics. Plus I'm a nice guy, and being seen as indomitable sounds pretty important to her at the moment, so I'd take a dive for her then sneakily open one eye whilst out cold to watch her enjoy her victory lap.

    2. Good style yep, I've trained with a fair few Kravists, and they will fight to the death, which is sometimes all you need. But Krav does have a lot of holes if you study it, and holes are dangerous.
But I've not much against it, main issue I have isn't with the style itself, though I'm not a big fan of military fighting styles, like that systema shit or whatever they call it, I just don't like the way it's run as a business. Everywhere I've trained through my life has been about training you, not making money, most places just take enough to cover the hall costs, chuck some mats or carpets down and go for gold at each other. Krav just wants to make money and instructors so it grows and grows and becomes the biggest around, which, in fairness, it's doing.
But what with the girl power and feministic shit, you seem like a trend follower so I can see why it appeals to you.

      Delete
    3. Nah, was a feminist before it was cool. It's actually kinda weird to see it become trendy now. Kinda nice though honestly. I know a lot of men are upset about it, but the world isn't just about men anymore. You have to share it with women now. I love feminine power. It's an exciting time.

      Delete
    4. Sounds a lot like the bdsm world, only where women's rights are considered, issues heard, and opinions given a fuck about.
Doesn't that sound more fun bra burner?
What's exciting about it? Honestly like? It wasn't exciting when Emily Pankhurst got trampled, and it isn't now. Same old same old, equal rights, equal pay, equal equal equal...but you're not equal are you? No. You're shorter, weaker, softer.
You complain and protest, yet thrown in the deep end you drown. It's not your faults to be fair, it's genetics, it's nature and no amount of billboard waving and high pitched whinging is gonna change it.
And then you come out with ludicrous statements like A would win because you're all for girl power. This is why you get raped.

      Delete
    5. The world has changed. It's more technological and cerebral. We're not relying on brute force as much anymore.

      Delete
    6. Ah....I see now...you lot would win, because you have better typing skills.
      Makes sense.
I agree...not with your absurdities sorry...the world is a far cry from the club em an drag em days, but you lot owe us for the ease and convenience you now wallow in by doing this technological revolution, for using cerebral power to double heat your irons and hair curlers, and what do you lot do when we give you these fandangled high wattage microwaves to help with the cooking? When we increase the revolutions of your washing machines to free up hoovering time (which, you're being replaced with by one of them disc thingys that cats ride on YouTube)?...you complain.
So no, not a lot has changed really has it?
You still all go round with your tits hanging out (here's looking at you Bell ;) ), your jeans slung low and tight as can be, totter round on 9inch heels because you like the way they make your ass and legs look, spend more than we do on clothes on your hair, and yet, and yet...you still need to draw Women Are People Too on a sheet of A3 paper, fasten it to a piece of two by four (cut by a man I'm sure) and take to the streets that life just isn't fair.

      Delete
    7. Well there you go female CEOs, judges, lawyers, business owners, managers, doctors, scientists, politicians, and professors. This is what you just got reduced down to.

      Delete
    8. And Psychopaths Are People Too. Communication is hypnotism and all that. Get people to think and to invest resources in a way that suits our own gene-pool. "The human brain is designed to convince" - genius insight, that. I know I read it in a New Scientist article, but no idea which issue.

Or just mess around and scope out other people's strengths and weaknesses, might come in handy (resources, status hierarchy etc etc.)

Swop, your style reminds me of Ricky Gervais - pick a topic and have a little play around with how it works in detail. Quite imaginative. I like that.

      Delete
    9. Swop, with a mouth like yours, why on earth were you not a scrumhalf?

      Delete
    10. You'd have a been a killer weapon for your team, stirring up the opposition forwards until they exploded. You'd need some moderate passing ability as well, of course. Little box kick here and there wouldn't hurt either.

      Delete
    11. Haha, thanks North, I'll take that. Though truth be told, I'm rapidly running out of misogynistic shit to make up against feminists.

I was never a serious, hardened rugbyist like yourself, just my school days more than anything and a bit of local town club play after that.
But then I discovered drink and drugs and you lot.
      End of my sporting days.

    12. Hhmm, all the memories. I think I'm gonna play again this year. I loved the psychological aspect as much as the physical. Confident, composed, powerful, dominant. Yeah, it's about time I got back into that.

    13. Fair enough. Times change.

I reckon A is right though. I need an outlet too, something to our my energy into. Something creative and tangible. Some fucker stole my mountain bike on Friday so I won't be doing that for a while.

      Delete
    14. Absolutely, I completely agree, especially with the likes of yourself, A, and me I guess, we think a lot, too much no doubt and we get bored easily.
Apologies if not you North, don't mean to generalise..but the way you talk about your rugby is extremely passionate, and oh I get that.
Sometimes, when shit is just getting to me too much, too easily, when my aggression levels are simmering, the Mrs will suggest, think you should go training love? And she's always right.
You and A can no doubt agree that there's a lot to be said for ringing ears, fat lips and aching bashed bodies no?
      Mentally like.

    15. Swop, yes everyone that knows me outside of the interwebs knows I love everything you have just described. I am a fan of the old feminist movement. I can't imagine any self respecting woman would put on a pussy costume and march around the street. That to me just seems classless and clownish. They need to read about the first feminist movements and replicate that. I also agree with Swop some of the "inequalities" these women are bitching about are not of any importance or even issues today. They need to go to places where women are being stoned to death or suffering FGM. I used to work with a woman from Sudan. I loved her stories. She would tell me how beautiful her country was but all the horrors that girls were put through was why her and her husband left. She made me laugh she was so jealous over him and would constantly remind him of how they live in America now so he better act right or else child support she would say. She learned fast hahaha.
