Different lives, different incentives

This is largely unrelated, except perhaps to the extent that it suggests that normal people often suffer from a lack or failure of not just affective empathy for those people that are considered different from them or are considered too remote to somehow trigger an empathetic response, but also cognitive empathy. People apparently have a very difficult time imagining what the lives of other people must be like.

From the Washington Post, "The big problem with one of the most popular assumptions about the poor", a discussion first of the infamous marshmallow experiment, in which child participants were asked to forego the instant gratification of one marshmallow in order to earn an additional marshmallow. The study participants were followed into adulthood and there was a correlation between ability to wait for the second marshmallow and general success, as society typically defines success. Also correlated, poverty and eating the first marshmallow without waiting. But why? Are they poor because they're impulsive? Or are they impulsive because they are poor? From the article:

The realization has sparked concerns that poverty begets a certain level of impulsiveness, and that that tendency to act in the moment, on a whim, without fully considering the consequences, makes it all the more difficult for poor children to succeed. But there's an important thing this discussion seems to miss. Poor kids may simply not want to delay gratification. Put another way, their decisions may not reflect the sort of impulsive nature we tend to attribute them to.

"When resources are low and scarce, the rational decision is to take the immediate benefit and to discount the future gain," said Melissa Sturge-Apple, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester who studies child development. "When children are faced with economic uncertainty, impoverished conditions, not knowing when the next meal is, etc. — they may be better off if they take what is in front of them."

***
In some ways, this uncovers a broader problem with how we perceive the actions of people who live very different lives than we do. We brand certain actions and choices as mistakes, when they might simply be developmental adjustments necessary to cope with their environment. For those who don't worry about their next meal, because they never had to, choosing a marshmallow now instead of two marshmallows in a few minutes, all things equal, could only be the result of impulse-driven folly. For those who do have to worry about the next meal, passing up food now for the promise of food later is the misguided move.

How did you know, my favorite "drunk camping" song???

      HA!!! LOL!!!

I love Led Zeppelin, and "Stairway To Heaven" is one of my favorite songs, from them!!! For some reason, when I am camping and get drunk, that is one of the songs I like to listen and sing to.:)

Robert Plant has the hair, voice, and "assets", and Jimmy Page has the guitar and guitar skills!!! You know more about guitars than I do-Page has THE GUITAR, in this video!!! Those who love guitar solos, will love this one!!!

My favorite part of the song, starts around the 9:15 mark:)

No idea what type of guitar Page is playing.

I first heard Stairway in my senior year in high school. We were riding around in my friend's car, and he was hopping up and down in his seat as he it turned on the 8 track full blast and passed around a huge joint . . . it was snowing outside and the windshield wipers were slapping double time.

Snowflakes hitting the windows morphed into glowing motes around the 9-minute mark. ;)

  2. It seems that most people carry some of the innocence of childhood into adulthood. But with sociopaths it seems there is a definite point where childhood is dead. And so is the goodness associated with it. As if it all just evaporates.

  14. I thought this bit from late author, Lucius Shepard, might amuse. Lucius was a close friend of mine.

“Of my many failings, the most galling was that I had wasted my gifts on genre fiction. Typically, I didn't count myself to blame but assigned blame to the editors and agents who had counseled me, to the marketers and bean counters who had delimited me, and to the people with whom I had surrounded myself—wives and girlfriends, my fans, my friends. They had dragged me down to their level, seduced me into becoming a populist. I saw them in my mind's eye overflowing the chambers of my life, the many rooms of my mansion, all the rooms in fantasy and science fiction, all the crowded, half-imaginary party rooms clotted with people who didn't know how to party, who failed miserably at it and frowned at those few who could and did, and yearned with their whole hearts to lose control, yet lacked the necessary passionate disposition; all the corridors of convention hotels packed with damaged, overstuffed women, their breasts cantilevered and contoured into shelf-like projections upon which you could rest your beer glass, women who chirped about Wicca, the Tarot, and the Goddess and took the part of concubine or altar-slut in their online role-playing games; all the semi-beautiful, equally damaged, semiprofessional women who believed they themselves were goddesses and concealed dangerous vibrators powered by rats' brains in their purses and believed that heaven could be ascended to from the tenth floor of the Hyatt Regency in Boston, yet rejected permanent residence there as being unrealistic; all the mad, portly men with their bald heads and beards and their eyeballs in their trouser pockets, whose wives caught cancer from living with them; all the dull hustlers who blogged ceaselessly and MacGyvered a career out of two ounces of talent, a jackknife, and a predilection for wearing funny hats, and humped the legs of their idols, who blogged ceaselessly and wore the latest fashions in the emperor's new clothes and talked about Art as if he were a personal friend they had met through networking, networking, networking, building a fan base one reader at a time; all the lesser fantasists with their fantasies of one day becoming a famous corpse like Andre Breton and whose latest publications came to us courtesy of Squalling Hammertoe Woo Hoo Press and who squeezed out pretentious drivel from the jerk-off rags wadded into their skulls that one or two Internet critics had declared works of genius, remarking on their verisimilitude, saying how much they smelled like stale ejaculate, so raw and potent, the stuff of life itself; all the ultra-successful commercial novelists (I numbered myself amongst them) whose arrogance cast shadows more substantial than anything they had written and could afford, literally, to treat people like dirt. . . Many of these people were my friends and, as a group, when judged against the entirety of the human mob, were no pettier, no more disagreeable or daft or reprehensible. We all have such thoughts; we find solace in diminishing those close to us, though usually not with so much relish. And while I kept on vilifying them, spewing my venom, I recognized they were not to blame for my deficiencies and that I was the worst of them all. I had all their faults, their neuroses, their foibles, and then some—I knew myself to be a borderline personality with sociopathic tendencies, subject to emotional and moral disconnects, yet lacking the conviction of a true sociopath. The longer I contemplated the notion, the more persuaded I was to embrace the opinion espoused in The Tea Forest that Thomas Cradles everywhere were men of debased character. The peculiar thing was, I no longer took this judgment for an insult.”

    3. Glad y'all enjoyed reading it. Lucius was one of my favorite penetrating cynics: He once wrote a scathing movie review of Harry Potter that inspired hundreds of Catholic kids in Great Britain to write him letters. Most addressed him as, Dear Lucifer. I teased him about it for years, and of course, he was rather proud to be associated with the devil.

I miss him. His dark humor, his strange outbursts of temper and reckless sense of adventure, his eyes wide open to every forbidden thing, all invigorated our friendship. Known throughout the SF community for his weakness for women, infidelity, wicked tongue and slithering arguments, he was someone who always had my back when the chips were down.

Long live Lucifer! May his luscious words burn for all eternity.

    4. From a review of Lucius' work. Were he alive, he'd fit right in on SW.

"They embody alternate versions of myself that are really not so alternate, they flicker on and off like light bulbs with failing connections, occasionally achieving brilliance, obscuring the lesser beacon of my ordinary self, then fading into obscurity." The only surprise may be that it has taken so long to admit such identification; though given that these are weak, selfish commitment-phobes who are part "vicious, near-sociopath" and part "immature manchild," it can have been no easy self-identification to make. Nevertheless, the account Shepard gives of his own early life in the introduction -- a big, angry, violent kid who was thrown out of school, confined for a while in a mental hospital, and later "travelled aimlessly, engaged in bar fights, street fights, insulated myself from the possibility of self-examination with drugs, played in a number of rock bands, married twice without giving the matter much thought, dabbled in low-level criminality, drug dealing, burglary, etc." -- sounds like the background we might anticipate for every one of his protagonists.

The marriages without much thought, for example, bespeaks the relationship with women that all of his protagonists share: even when described as old and ugly, they seem to enjoy a very active sex life, usually initiated by the woman. The woman is, invariably, older if the character is young, younger if the character is old, and is generally ready for any sort of kinkiness. The man rarely initiates these encounters, has all of his desires readily catered for, and ends up feeling guilty because he cannot foresee a long term relationship with the woman. In fact, the men seem to be constitutionally incapable of making a commitment; in "Vacancy," for example, the washed-up film actor Cliff Coria finally starts to think that he might be able to make a commitment to his much younger lover, only to kill her at the end of the story."

I know he was never formally diagnosed, but I do think, given this statement in particular, that he was on the spectrum, "They embody alternate versions of myself that are really not so alternate, they flicker on and off like light bulbs with failing connections, occasionally achieving brilliance, obscuring the lesser beacon of my ordinary self, then fading into obscurity."

It pleases me to think of you tuning into his sardonic character. I know that, if he lives on, he's appreciating your female attention.

He may have been overweight in his later years, but his mind and spirit were sharp and radiant -- he was a lazy but very effective rake, always luring women to listen to and sympathize with him. And he truly did help a ton of people, despite the fact that he had no faith in humanity, seeing them as hopelessly stupid and greedy.

He also never apologized for anything, always skating beyond the grasp of accountability, but was so entertaining, so smart and so much fun and, you would wind up forgiving everything and want to hang out with him.

    2. Okay I just had to watch the ending -- I'll were the hijab covering with a short skirt and the second pair of boots she brought out for the hubby ! :D I think that would be honouring to my hubby . Haha.

It's a good video about her own convictions, ethics and morals inside. I can understand the conversion. Some things seemed cut and dry to me about the clothing. But I can understand if she put her self esteem and worth tied into it and she wanted free of it with her past. Definitely don't want to take away from her message of hope.

I'm sure it goes he other way too.

Well it does ...take a look at the Amish religion and Mennonite people who want to wear clothes that are more liberated. My mother in law wore a head covering before when they were Mennonites -- Not no more. My father in law said the church shuns you after you leave.

It boils down to respecting each others convictions, boundaries and personal ethics.

No ones wrong or right. It's just a different way .....maybe not your own way.

There's a scripture in the bible that talks about how easy it is to love the
      " ones like us."

But can we love the ones unlike us?

Something to definitely think about. I ponder on that a lot.

Is Allah another name for God?

But I guess I could google that. :)

PS. Jonaid what happens if she chose to leave Islam - would they turn on her? It seems like some religion falls short of that including Christianity. Not all... But some.

      Delete
    3. I always appreciate your honest feedback Super. I agree with most of what you said.

Allah literally is Arabic for God. I think Muslims should use "God" in English but for some reason many keep using Allah. Arab Christians and Jews use the word "Allah" when they refer to God.

Nothing would happen to her if she chooses to leave Islam. I don't think she's stupid enough to join a death cult. Having said that, there are a tiny minority of nutcases in Islam who are insecure in their faith or are hypocrites and may put on a false display of piety by shouting & threatening someone who openly leaves the religion. Hypocrites and self-righteous people exist in every country, religion, race etc.

Here's what the Qur'an says about freedom of religion:

"There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believes in God has grasped a firm handhold which will never break. God is Hearer, Knower."

      Qur'an 2:256

"If it had been thy Lord's will, they would all have believed,- all who are on earth! will you then compel mankind, against their will, to believe?"

      Qur'an 10:99

"To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what God hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If God had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to God; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;"

      Qur'an 5:48

There's more but this should suffice to highlight what the Qur'an clearly says about religious freedom.

  21. Hi everyone,
I'm so excited my husband is back after he have left me for another woman.
My husband and I have been married for about 7 yrs now. We were happily married with two kids, a boy and a girl. 3 months ago, I started to notice some strange behavior from him and a few weeks later I found out that my husband is seeing someone. He started coming home late from work, he hardly care about me or the kids anymore, Sometimes he goes out and doesn't even come back home for about 2-3 days. I did all I could to rectify this problem but all to no avail. I became very worried and needed help. As I was browsing through the internet one day, I came across a website that suggested that Dr Unity can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and and told him my problems and he told me what to do and i did it and he did a spell for me. 24 hours later, my husband came to me and apologized for the wrongs he did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I and my family are living together happily again.. All thanks to Dr Unity. If you have any problem contact him and i guarantee you that he will help you. He will not disappoint you. Email him at: Unityspelltemple@gmail.com or call him on: +2348072370762..I am Donna Murray by name and I reside here in United States..Contact Dr.Unity for help via email: Unityspelltemple@gmail.com .
