Artistic imperatives

The other day I took a tour of a prison.  I was interested in the security measures and the very idea of having an institution like a prison, the thought of which seems common enough but the reality of which we rarely get to experience firsthand.  I was even more interested in hearing about some of the more famous inmates and what got them there.

Later that afternoon I was visiting a modern art museum, the type that has a few key pieces to bring in the gray haired and the tourists but prides itself on also presenting a lot of fresh talent.  The diversity of the types and style reminded me that anything can be looked at from an aesthetic perspective.  The context of seeing these works in the museum made me look at the art, even the unfamiliar and nonuser friendly art, in a way that invited me to appreciate the small aesthetic choices that the artist made, whereas the context of the prison invited me to distance myself from the actions that led the prisoners to their sojourn there.

I had this odd epiphany in the museum that, particularly for some of the more gruesome and "senseless" crimes (like serial killing) that may seem to unfathomable to most people, there is a certain aestheticism and set of choices that is not unlike the art.  It reminded me of some of my own fantasies about slitting someone's throat, and how if I were a killer, I could imagine myself really enjoying exploring the nuances of this particular way to kill, in all of its infinite variations.  I could see how someone could devote their entire life to this exploration and feel quite fulfilled -- how some might actually feel compelled, either by the beauty of the art form or by the need for self expression in a particular way, to continually seek out this cathartic release of truth in concrete form.

Is the imperative that a killer often feels to kill in a particular way and a particular type of person any different than the artists' need to express himself in a very different, but similarly particular way?

I had never thought of killing that way, but now that I have it makes complete sense that serial killers will get apprentices, or imitators, or plain fans, just like artists.  It suddenly became clear to me that many people kill not because it is bad or good, deviant or heroic, but just because it is beautiful.  Even the way that formal justice has historically been enacted in the form of torture and capital punishment suggests a certain flair for creativity and desire for expression.  It's a shame that formal justice has become more sterile recently, for the punishers and the punished, at least in western society.  It is becoming a lost art.

  5. M.E. I have fantasies about slitting throats too, and the thrill they provide me is primarily sexual. Something about the ferocity of the act is viscerally intimate.

I have considered the act of killing and mutilation from an aesthetic perspective. I read horror novels and relish the murder scenes in the same way that some people take pleasure in pornography or erotica, and I indulge my predilections through sublimation in the bedroom, and when pleasuring myself. I wonder if that makes me sick.

I have never openly admitted this to anyone.

    7. I'm afraid I couldn't point you to a thread at the moment; I discussed that subject in the comments section long ago. Maybe I will search for my comments on the topic a bit later on, once I've had a bit of sleep.

To make a long story short, I grew up in a household with an enabling mother and a psychopathic father who physically and verbally abused me.

As a young teen, my mom made me see a shrink because it was clear I had "issues" (aggression, lying, irresponsibility, violence, etc.) It didn't help, because I lied to her about everything. My conduct just got worse.

A few years later, I had a very powerful, personal spiritual experience that changed the course of my life and influenced the decisions I made from that point forward.

When a person gets saved, one thing changes and one thing only--the person's spirit. Man is made up of spirit, soul(personality) and body. Hence, one's personality and body remain the same. The Christian tries to study the Bible and line up with it, in his soul and body( which is called "the flesh") However, he never, ever will.
So, you are in error expecting Alterego(or any Christian) to be perfect. There was one perfect man--Jesus. You may want to find Him ~~~

      Delete
    13. @ Bible anon

OK. I don't know very much about Christianity and its trappings. I was assuming that her masturbatory fantasies, and her indulging them, are a reflection of her state of spiritual purity. Or some such nonsense. It sounds as if she is troubled by her thoughts if she has asked to be delivered from them.

    14. I think its hot that Alter is asking God to take away his secret fantasies. Its sweet.

I have found that the more shame I give something, the more power it has over me.

Maybe try accepting these thoughts? Knowing that everybody has them to some degree and that its healthy to process them, vs reject them.

    15. I wish I could be less shamed, as I am shamed for every friggin thought I have

Christianity is so misunderstood. At it's roots, it is the love of a father for his children. It is all about love, but we humans make it all about rules.

      Delete

Christianity was TAKEN as a tool to control the masses. That was not it's intent, ever. Billy Graham says 80% of the Christians in churches are not even saved. A true Christian is quite rare.

      Delete
    22. @ The Gungy- agreed. Organized religion is vague and dangerous and only as sane as you make it. I can't decided if it does more harm than good.

    23. What is sweet is not message Alter is following. But the fact that she wants to try to purify herself. Its endearing.

      Delete
    24. @Anon 5:06

I don't think Alter is trying to reject them. Not anymore at least. She did, and even asked her God to take them away. And when that didn't happen, she took that as a sign she should just accept them. Which is a pretty neat bit of rationalization, if you ask me.

Of course; taken to its extremes, it means that if something happens, it only happened because God didn't prevent it. Which means that everything that happens happens because He wants it to happen. Which means he's evil (by most human standards, at least).

      Delete
    25. @ Wheatly

Thats good insight. I don't know how she processes but if that is a rationalization, more power to her.

    26. I guess when it comes to religion and theology, I love debating it, but I always come up with the same answer, 'I don't know'
I don't think that I possess the ability to know such grand scale answers. People are more on a level that I can *try* comprehending. Human beings are my religion. :)

      Delete
    27. Well, I do try to reject them, sometimes. The problem is that I do not feel any shame or guilt associated with these thoughts, even though I possess a cognitive understanding that they are wrong. So my mind is not producing any powerful emotional deterrents to restrain them. I wish I didn't have them in the first place, but I can't really help what gets me off.

I don't know, Medusa. I think Peck's whole point is about that issue of the gaslighting result of denying the abused their experience and reality, for the sake of one's own. Whether it isn't as bad to just not care, or Peck just couldn't conceive of it, is a good question.

Or in the case that you have to know your sins to be truly guilty and absolved for them, are there many evil people masquerading around as good because they acknowledge their small sins and not their underlying characteristic ones.

As best I can tell this is some right of passage here at SW. It doesn't get you anything and I'm not sure if it ever ends. I actually want to hear about others and what they've been through. But we all know that's a rare gem... hence why I guess me sharing becomes the center of attention. I have no problems with this as I have been nored out of my mind.

    21. She does. I have been extremely open to her at times.

    22. Oh so you want out war stories, huh. Ok I'll give you one of mine. i got married and did not love my husband sexually. In fact I had disdain for him. I was complainig the minute we went down the alter. Before, even.

No never cheated and neither did he. No Jerry Springer moments. Sorry.

    23. How is it you can MAKE her stay?

      Delete
    24. Why did you take the walk then?

      Delete
    25. He can't. He just likes to feel like he's in control when he isn't.

      Delete
    26. make her stay? not sure I can any longer, I might have one more magic trick up my sleeve with her, but she's pretty much seen them all.

    27. UKan, please be a good girl and throw a solution with each problem you think you see. Otherwise you sound like a bitch.

    28. I got tired of being in a loveless, passionless marriage where I didn't respect him. I need to have respect for my mate. Seeing people walk over him (myself included) made me sick to my stomach.

      Delete
    29. Sorry, I meant the walk down the aisle to begin with?

    30. She should leave you and stick you with the child support, but she can't because you've broken her. She disdains you. But you deserve each other. The only thing you could hope to get that would be better would be someone with no children. You're only options are your wife, or the local bar maid you've been eyeing. So do you still cheat on her? And did you love the Greek Spanish or whatever?doesn't sound like love is in your stars. Why not just push your wife away. Being alone doesn't daunt you, as you experience none of the benefits of companionship.

      Delete
    31. Oh. I think he was the only man I met who I was sure would never leave me no matter what. I settled for the wrong man for a somewhat legitimate reason. I was bored out of my fucking mind, and in denial about just how boring he was. I had gone through a string of idiots just before meeting him and thought well hell, I DESERVE someone who will be devoted to me after all those other idiots.

      Ridiculous.

    33. Anon, no not ridiculous. Just life. You got an experience out of it. Did you learn anything?

      Delete
    34. why do you think she is broken. Kany??

      Delete
    35. Yes I learned valuable lessons. I learned I cannot control whether someone will leave or not. I learned I am not a person who can live without good sex, I learned I am not suzie homemaker and never will be, I learned I don't need to be with someone who won't leave for better self esteem, or security. It was a good thing. I have my whole life ahead of me.

      Delete
    36. I also learned I need someone to push back, not a pushover.

      Delete
    37. Then the experience wasn't wasted. Might not have been fun, but you gained

      Delete
    38. No I never said the experience was a waste. Many women with my problems don't even get married. I took a big risk making that mistake. It was pretty frigggin courageous. And I had a big beautiful wedding lol. The inlaws gave me a lot of good stories to tell. Crazy people. Complete adventure. Then I went through the divorce and another string of shitheads, but this time I am dealing with the original attraction to shitheads.

    39. Gunge what are you going to learn from your marriage?

    40. UKan, please be a good girl and throw a solution with each problem you think you see. Otherwise you sound like a bitch.

I sound like a bitch? I wasn't the one who had someone fucking my wife on the front porch and let it go. I gave you a solution. You are just too much of a coward to go through with it.

    41. That if you play with shit your hands get dirty.

    42. She's not broken. She's just living the good life while this sucker goes out and pays for her drinking habits and wild sex sprees when he is gone. She doesn't even talk to him anymore. He's nothing but a check.

    43. An alcoholic is broken. Drinking two six packs a night isn't upstanding. She's as trashy as he is.

      Delete
    44. Well at least she's living it up. It sounds like she's having a great time while he's out there brassed off.

    45. UGirl are funny as all get out. I haven't been able to see your advice for the insults and presumptions you make. I think you are frustrated UTwo. I think this from your over aggression. I think you don't like you very much, so you project your vile interpretation of yourself on others. My guess is you are a very over weight (325+) short woman in her late twenties who is to ashamed to get out in public, too lazy to fix her image and her attitude towards life. So, you created some online personas... at least four that I see so far, there may be more. UKan and Kany are your hate and rage... they're tuff guys and girls ready to tell the world how awesome they have it and how fucked up everybody else is. You keep throwing ice cream and pancakes into your fat face as you smile upon the cute insults you put together... cut the computer off dear, get out of the room and go for a walk before you're 800 oundes and they have to remove a wall or two to get you out.

      Come on! UKan Do It.

      Delete
    46. Yeah, I guess she found someone to satisfy what she's willing to want. They're both only willing to want very little.

    47. Let's talk about projecting. How much does your wife weigh? And I know how much you like them short...

    49. She's 5'4" and 140 now as she gets older. It ain't the 115 pound 20 year old no more. But she is much much smaller than U.

      UKan B Larger Than Life

    50. Im just giving you the hard truth Grungy. There's nothing aggressive about it. I'm sure fooling yourself into believing I'm everyone here is a lot easier than having to face the facts in your own life, isn't it?

      Delete
    51. You were the one who said she wasn't physically satisfying you anymore grungy.

      Delete
    52. Than why'd you ask green if she was a shorty? And you're right. Your wife is much smaller than me. Personally I'm a lot turned off by short and fat, but I guess if you can still sleep with her... to each his own.

      Delete
    53. Oh, wait. You can't. So can you still get it up with the young shorties you chase? Or is that becoming a typical issue at your age?

      Delete
    54. Not everyone. And I faced the fats. We got that. You have your drawn conclusion from the facts which is a only a distorted end brought on by your picking and choosing to focus on the certain issue you want. Then you insist on telling me my story through your eyes. your warped. you want my life to be shit so you'll feel better about yours (whatever the truth maybe). you wish you had had just any bit of whatever it was that I had that said "make bold choices and live by the decisions", you just engross yourself every night with this web sight... sad really. How long have UGuys been coming here?

    55. Physical appearence doesn't matter as long as she's got a pussy, it's all good.

      Delete
    56. Im repeating your life back to you from what you've told me. You are the one making things up about people's lives here Grungy. You said that she fucked someone else and you were a bitch and let her stay in the marriage with you despite not being satisfied with her even physically. Now you are projecting on everyone else. Making guessing games and assumptions that you are just using to discard what we are telling you.

If I'm playing Kany and other people here I must be a genius, because even M.E. doesn't think that's the truth. Maybe you are the one and only to have figured it out Grungy, because you are just so fucking smart. Smarter than everyone here.

    57. Dr. Freud, dr. Freud, come quick!

Alright. Gungy, let's see if your as good about telling us our life from your perspective as we are of telling you yours from ours.
Or you can just tell us how far off we are. So how far in left field are we?

    58. Physical appearence doesn't matter as long as she's got a pussy, it's all good.

I don't agree. There's too many girls out there not to be picky.

    59. "You said that she fucked someone else and you were a bitch and let her stay in the marriage with you despite not being satisfied with her even physically."

See, that's what I'm talking about. Your eyes. I didn't say I wasn't attracted to her physically at the time of the event. I was. As I said this was a long time ago. She had but given birth once and was still very young and beautiful; the sex was still outstanding. I never said I was a bitch at all. I got to keep my house, my kid, and after that little ordeal, my wife's knees locked together for quite sometime to come. That's to say she has, I just don't think she was willing to even try for a little while.

"If I'm playing Kany and other people here I must be a genius, because even M.E. doesn't think that's the truth. "

I told you last night you were a genius.

  20. Killing can be an art. I would love to be appointed the Federal Executioner. Any persons convicted of henious crimes against the public and were there by sentenced to death by execution through means seen fit by the federal executioner would come see me. At that time it would be my job to see that they were disposed of by whatever means I chose. Death could be instant or very long and agonizing.

What colorful ways could you come up with? Let's be artistic!

    ReplyDelete
  21. People are full of shit. Art? There are hormones and neurotransmitters. People do things mostly on urge. They don't want to admit this and often are not even aware of it but in any case would rather present themselves in some higher light of "art". Art is manipulation. It's nonsense.

People love to talk about themselves.
