Guest post: Explaining the Villain

From a reader:

Often he's presented as male, antisocial, perhaps depressed and more than likely suffered some sort of childhood abuse. He has no faith in humanity or the decency of the ordinary individual. His only interest is in himself, in satisfying his own needs and maintaining his own well-being.

If you look at human instinct, you'll see our animal and rational sides.

Our animal instincts are all linked to self-preservation. The need to eat, sleep, fuck and our emotions: empathy, sympathy, sadness, fear, kindness. In society we raise ourselves to believe that emotions are good, that personal needs are questionable and only suitable to be satisfied if it poses no threat to the community around us.

Then you've got our rational half. Our self-awareness, our ability to check the logic of our own actions and moderate our instincts.

We pretend, with our apparent intelligence, that we can overcome our animal instincts, that they're unnecessary and ought to be shut down because of a strong fear that we might lose control.

If one person is too different, if they're apt to lose control or have ideas that present a threat to the majority, we will cast them out in order to protect the stability of our herd. This is the beginning of our villain. He will be made to feel defective, different and discriminated against from the beginning. Made to feel he or she is inherently wrong for things they have no control over.

The defective unit will be cast out and left to fend for himself. Once out, our young one will be welcomed back in. The invitation, however, is conditional. The person must surrender what it is about them that makes them different. People will say that its an optional trait, that this thing can be discarded, that if the person was normal there would be no problem.

Our outcast is naturally resentful and his difference may well be something that cannot be changed.

After being outside for long enough, our alien will have learned to appreciate his position. He is out of the forest and can see the trees. He can see the herd for what it is, the faults, the failures, the bureacracy and its inability to perform a logic check its own reasoning. Depending on how badly he's been treated, he will often attempt to help the individuals in the herd and free them from their ignorance. Enlighten them as to their position. They will retaliate and be scared, refuse to believe the ideas of the outcast because he's been flagged as dangerous.

After this failure, our alien will naturally be angry, he'll take the herd as prey and treat them as an enemy. He will be treated as a second class citizen, still subject to all the same rules and regulations as normal herd members but without a voice. It won't be recognised that he can provide anything of discernable value to the community. His ideas, however enlightened they might be in reality, are null and void and out of that same fear of a loss of stability, can't even be looked at in case it damages society.

  1. Does the person who falls in love with a sociopath, and cannot get over it, fall in love with a mirror to the person's own face i.e the person who is in love.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Being a victim of that kind of love, I aske myself that everyday. I know I feel more sociopathic now, having come into such close contact with it in him.

    ReplyDelete
  3. From reading the archives, I see that the sociopath has a flexible or non existent sense of self.

The "victim" of the sociopath has a weak sense of self. The sociopath mirrors the "victims" self back to the "victim".

The "victim" feels empowered due to feeling her OWN sense of self.

However, she does not realize that he only mirrored her.

She needs to get what he mirrored from other sources so she can have it without having him.

Because, in the end, the self he,initially, mirrored back to her, he will destroy.

  4. Reeks of fatalist poetic justice. Reality is rather distant in this one. I wonder who wrote it. It's exactly the stuff I would write for this site.

What do you mean "reality" is rather distant in this one"

do you really think I listen to my stomach? Is that what you thought listing to your "gut" means? Some people call it your gut, some call it intuition, another good word is your instincts. It all is a part of your mind, the thoughts you have before motives or rationalising kick in.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anon, that's exactly how I've described it - it was like two mirrors face to face, infinitely reflecting the same image. I didn't know where I stopped and he began. My words came out of his mouth, his out of mine. I knew every reaction, every response before he evinced it. It changed everything I've ever assumed about human identity and autonomy, and I've spent years trying to piece together a reality that can accommodate the experience.

  9. Yes J
It is a strange fun house mirrors thing.
    I agree :)

Describe your background? Describe your sense of how you feel about yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  11. No sweetcheeks. I'm well aware of what gut reactions are.

  12. I'll give you what a think is most relevant for this medium. I'm a widower of four and half years, and was more vulnerable to predation than I realized. I had already spent a couple of years rebuilding my sense of identity, so it's possible that I was already on shaky ground. The socio unsurprisingly destabilized that almost to the point of oblivion. My only professional diagnoses have been PTSD from watching my partner die, and ensuing depression. I've examined other possible disorders with both my therapist and my shrink, but I'm assured that I'm pretty damn healthy for my own good. It FEELS borderline, or schizotypal, but I don't meet criteria, and, in fact, manifest mostly the opposite of many of the symptoms. I can tell you that emotionally, I am dead inside, and can feel and think like a sociopath now, but my residual, native empathy won't allow me to cross the line, nor would I want to.

  13. Yes, I understand all that you say :)

  15. No, though am sometimes just too lazy and selfish. Well, the last few paragraphs seems too intent to express some kind of causal symmetry or linearity, exactly the kind of stuff I like to conclude, but I suspect reality is perhaps more chaotic and disjointed. The so called 'outcast' could equally turn out to be an average Joe, as a well as serial killer or village shaman depending not only on other variables but personal choice as well.

    psycho-cunt:

Sociopaths and narcissists aren’t remotely the same. Don’t insult me.

    I plan, I act, and I achieve.

Narcs plan, attempt to act, fail, and lie to themselves by saying that they didn’t even need to achieve what they wanted in the first place because they’re better than that.

    Pathetic.

    Disgusting.

    And most of all delusional.

I don’t care if I don’t know you; if you’re a narcissist I already despise you. I would love to fuck you all over—one by fucking one— and finally make you realize you’re a worthless, useless, piece of shit and I would enjoy every fucking minute of it.

    I don’t care if I’m sadistic sometimes, I really don’t.

    I'm a Sociopath.

I love games, I love making people tick, and most of all I love control. Sometimes I can be a little sadistic.

    I'm the queen of observation.

Your habits and weaknesses are my fascination.

If you're remotely interesting I'll follow you.

  21. The funny thing about issues like the above is that everyone insists that someone who is - a sociopath, a hypochondriac, has multiple personality disorder, OCD, ADD, or paranoia, or anything of the sort, really - has to have every single symptom in order to be whatever it is. People believe it has to be to the extreme, or it isn’t actually there.

While there are many sociopaths that don’t have any sort of connection to any other human being on the planet, there are some - maybe few, but they’re still there - that grow attached. Maybe it’s just to one person, or maybe that rule doesn’t apply to them (though, that’s a case I’ve yet to see), but my point is that not all of the “rules” above apply to every sociopath out there, and it is ignorant to believe they do.

    Obvious aspie is obvious.

  26. tnp, sweetcheeks, gag, anon, ami/erin, or others who understand personal, automnomous "gut", do you think that listening to it, without doubting and vacillating is a symptom of sociopathy, or a symptom of being around sociopath?

If one of your parents told you at a very impressionable age, that men often say "I love you" in the midst of sex, and that you should take it lightly, do you become sociopathic, and one who views "love" and closeness as a lie?

Has anyone ever felt like them being born has "ruined" one of your parents?

Watch a feral tiger hunt. The sociopath is in touch with his primal instincts.

A sense of self is separate from that. An animal does not have a sense of self, as we humans define it, but it has primal instincts to which it adheres.

  60. how can one have a flexible sense of self and ALSO be a primal instinctual thing.

A flexible sense of self, pressed into the service of sating primal instinct.

Someone with a tentative sense of self may not be able to  identify the need, mirroring is like handing them a teat of crack.   A sociopath is consumed by the need and will modify their presentation in calculated pursuit.

  61. Ami was epoch defining. Pre the exchange of awareness, swordplay and humor, Post a  jizzfest, use of clubs for combat and still funny.   Someone comes here to bleed and  the scent changes the tone.  So socio boys & girls is that a strength or a weakness? What, if anything does it say about her power?

It would seem a sociopath's opportunities for awareness and exchange might in life, be somewhat proscribed.  In that context, It is fascinating how this has become a beeper dating site.  Carry on.
