Sociopaths in the news: Albert Gonzalez

This is an interesting (but long) profile in the New York Times of a hacker, turned government informant/consultant, who managed to continue his criminal activities under their noses. I'll include the excerpts that scream sociopath (or autism, really):
“He could be very disarming, if you let your guard down. I was well aware that I was dealing with a master of social engineering and deception. But I never got the impression he was trying to deceive us.”

Gonzalez’s gift for deception, however, is precisely what made him one of the most valuable cybercrime informants the government has ever had. After his help enabled officials to indict more than a dozen members of Shadowcrew, Gonzalez’s minders at the Secret Service urged him to move back to his hometown, Miami, for his own safety. (It was not hard for Shadowcrew users to figure out that the one significant figure among their ranks who hadn’t been arrested was probably the unnamed informant in court documents.) After aiding another investigation, he became a paid informant in the Secret Service field office in Miami in early 2006. Agent Michael was transferred to Miami, and he worked with Gonzalez on a series of investigations on which Gonzalez did such a good job that the agency asked him to speak at seminars and conferences. “I shook the hand of the head of the Secret Service,” Gonzalez told me. “I gave a presentation to him.” As far as the agency knew, that’s all he was doing. “It seemed he was trying to do the right thing,” Agent Michael said.

At his sentencing hearing in March, where he received two concurrent 20-year terms, the longest sentence ever handed down to an American for computer crimes, the judge said, “What I found most devastating was the fact that you two-timed the government agency that you were cooperating with, and you were essentially like a double agent.”

Gonzalez’s closest friend, Stephen Watt, who is now serving a two-year prison sentence for coding a software program that helped Gonzalez steal card data, describes Gonzalez as having “a Sherlock Holmes quality to him that is bounded only by his formal education.” Like the other hackers who would go on to form the inner circle of Gonzalez’s criminal organization, Watt met Gonzalez when both were teenagers, on EFnet, an Internet relay chat network frequented by black hats. Watt and Gonzalez interacted strictly online for a year, though each lived in South Florida. Once they began spending time together, in Florida and New York, Watt, who is 27, noticed that Gonzalez’s talents as an online criminal carried over into his life away from the computer. “He could spot wedding rings at 50 yards. He could spot a Patek Philippe at 50 yards. He would have been a world-class interrogator. He was very good at figuring out when people were lying.”

Like many hackers, Gonzalez moved easily between the licit and illicit sides of computer security. Before his first arrest, in the A.T.M. lobby, Gonzalez made his way from Miami to the Northeast after he hacked into a New Jersey-based Internet company and then persuaded it to hire him to its security team. The transition from fraudster to informant was not too different.

“I did find the investigation exciting,” Gonzalez told me of turning against Shadowcrew. “The intellectual element. Unmasking them, figuring out their identities. Looking back, it was kind of easy, though. When someone trusts you, they let their guard down.”

Indeed, no one I spoke with compared him to a gangster or a mercenary — preferred honorifics among hackers — but several likened him to a brilliant executive. “In the U.S., we have two kinds of powerful, successful business leaders. We have people like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, who are the most sophisticated of electronic technicians and programmers,” says Steve Heymann, the Massachusetts assistant U.S. attorney who, in the spring of 2010, secured a combined 38 years of prison time for Gonzalez and his co-conspirators for their corporate breaches. “Then we have others, like the C.E.O.’s of AT&T or General Electric, who are extremely good in their area but also know when to go to others for expertise and how to build powerful organizations by using those others. Gonzalez fits into that second category.”

Gonzalez relished the intellectual challenges of cybercrime too. He is not a gifted programmer — according to Watt and Toey, in fact, he can barely write simple code — but by all accounts he can understand systems and fillet them with singular grace. I often got the impression that this was computer crime’s main appeal for Gonzalez.

But he also liked stealing. “Whatever morality I should have been feeling was trumped by the thrill,” he told me.

It seems clear now that Gonzalez didn’t mind betraying people.

When they pieced together how Gonzalez organized these heists later, federal prosecutors had to admire his ingenuity. “It’s like driving to the building next to the bank to tunnel into the bank,” Seth Kosto, an assistant U.S. attorney in New Jersey who worked on the case, told me. When I asked how Gonzalez rated among criminal hackers, he replied: “As a leader? Unparalleled. Unparalleled in his ability to coordinate contacts and continents and expertise. Unparalleled in that he didn’t just get a hack done — he got a hack done, he got the exfiltration of the data done, he got the laundering of the funds done. He was a five-tool player.”

[When sentenced] Gonzalez just leaned forward and peered straight ahead at the judge, as though — the set of his head was unmistakable — staring intensely at a computer.

  1. That footnote sounds a little sensational, if you ask me.

If not a sociopath, he was probably some sort of conscience-deficient leader-type.

I can just imagine Glenn Beck's response. "Cuban cyber-terrorist dupes United State Government! We must close our sea-borders using sharks with laser canons!"

  3. Nice story M.E. Gonzalez is the kind of criminal that I referred to in the other thread, the one I’d be tempted to exonerate if I were on a jury hearing his case.

As for the profile itself, the moral of the story, boys and girls, is to never commit the same type of crime more than a handful of times (or if you do, switch your tactics to make it harder to track everything back to you) and ALWAYS have a get out of the country emergency plan in place ready and waiting the moment you suspect the jig is up.

  4. In reference to what you commented on earlier Zwaq: zWaq maybe should read all the comments before stepping into shit. We already established what racism means. How is a black person refering to his friend as nigga racist? You don't understand black culture at all. Nor do you care to.
I find it strange that the only complaint white people have against blacks is THIS. That they cant call us nigger anymore. WOW. I have quite a few complaints against white amerikkka believe me. One of them being the fact that every white person has one token black friend that is never around (Convienently) and seems to think that they can now call blacks niggers. Whats funny is I have heard this across the country from white people, and it's always the same thing. "I have a black friend." No you don't. Nobody but a uncle tom is going to listen to you disrespect their people like that. What I find rich is that you are flipping the whole script and calling blacks racist, because you can't call them niggers. How did you pull that off?
Dont worry about what black people call each other it's none of your business. You think you can now tell black people how to refer to each other. Ok, yes massah. Now that you wanna stop calling me a nigger and you expect us to follow suit. Wrong. We flipped that word over, and white people are steady mad about it. White's cant use nigger. If you want to know why try slavery, genocide, and rape of our people.

  6. i think this post and the careers self-employment post of a couple days ago can be tied together nicely. prostitution is like this, for instance: if you don't want to get caught, the best way to do it is to be both discrete and self-employed. (it's also the best way to avoid the violence of an employer. but you also have to be sure you can take care of yourself.)

it's not bad, if you get to call the shots.

  7. At least you aren't on the African American band wagon. I found out the hard way in Florida that such a term is not universally accepted in the States.

I think you're absolutely right, Son of Sam. We need to come up with a term for those lazy, degenerate and criminal blacks that fit negative stereotypes, and that also utilizes brevity. How about we take a more modern term that not only replaces the N word but can also be used to reference farts, crack-heads and homosexuals? Sounds like win to me!

    Boofer it is.

    What up, ma boofer?

  8. Ty, Anon, it's nice to see my previous points make such an impact and be expanded. And yeah, if you're a boofer you should probably not try self employment. There's a special place in society for you.

  9. i actually wasn't making a reference to the post at 9:43 at all. i was talking about the op, the one about gonzales and criminal activity. (i am, in fact, a prostitute. it's good profession if you like sex, aren't fond of attachment, and your clients understand you can make life completely miserable for them if any attempt to harm you.

i was ignoring the 9:43 post because it didn't seem to have relevance to what was originally being discussed.

what i will say, however: there's no point in being hurt by what anyone calls you. revenge is infinitely more satisfying than pain.

(i have to go now. no offense intended to anyone if i don't respond to further posts.)

Son Of Sam you are just another typical black man crying about racism when it is obvious you are a racist yourself.

  16. It seems like Americans don't really know to much about anyone except their immediate culture. I always knew about and read about Americans lack of knowledge when it comes to world politics, other languages, and other cultures. I was not aware that they were ignorant of cultures even inside their own country. This I think comes from the little money they spend on education. They are below some third world countries on the world scale. If we stay on this education cutting type of governemnt then Europe will become the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  17. And I suppose you know about the many microcosms of cultures inside of America, too?

Watch out, that soap-box can get slippery.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yoro it is you who is ignorant of OUR culture, which is funny because you call on US to save your bacon when theres a world war. In America there are niggers and there are black people. Like Obama is black. Some crackhead is a nigger. There's white trash and there's white people. George bush was white, and people who live in trailers are trash. It's not about race. Everyone here is equal. You just have to earn your way.

  19. Path, you mastermind boofer, I was talking about P-Mod's video post and yesterday's thread.

UKan, I'm not really a racist. Do you think we all belong to something special here? No we don't. If you do business with me and try to screw me over then you're treated just like everyone else who tried to screw me over (unless I was feeling rather creative that day). You cannot pull a "sociopath" card with me. You're NOT special. I'm not either. If you took your mind off racism and politics, both of which are meaningless, you'd probably enjoy the benefits. Just don't get so bored you have to meddle in my business :)

As for me, I treat all dregs of society equal: Black, White, Hispanic. I don't care what race you are or how you feel about it.

  21. I hate opinionated generalizations so freaking much. They are proven wrong far too easily. If you want to be taken seriously, don't say stupid things about groups consisting of millions of people, because the counter-examples will step right up to prove you wrong.
When you exaggerate your statements, a little switch turns off in people's minds, and they stop listening. However, if you merely wanna stir shit up and start an argument that wastes time going nowhere, then keep doing what you're doing. :o)

  25. Well now that we are all out of our comfort zone, let's talk about this hacker. He should have quit while he was ahead.
I did like how he used everybody to hack for him, and didn't really do to much himself. I read about some other hacker that would con people out of their passwords and personal information to get into their corporate computers and take millions. I always thought hacking involved making crazy programs and typing away for days on end. There is a lot of opportunities out there to get rich.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He was a cracker and a social engineer, not a hacker.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's exactly right UKan, now that racism and politics are not the subject we can start bouncing ideas. How about putting zero effort into hacking yourself when you can simply use a hacker you're blackmailing? Oh, damnit... The word black just keeps coming back up doesn't it. Beware, use a kike-betrayer like that spic Gonzalez and he's more likely to kill you than serve, or at least too borderline for comfort. (Having the balls to betray a betraying class of society should be a big clue)

  30. Taking advantage of weak minds for your own ends is hardly something especially reverent, it's the sociopath status quo.

Hackers (real hackers) are typically hyper-social online within their communities. All it takes is one or a few alphas with a vision of where to divert all that genius and energy and you suddenly have an anonymous army. It's probably similar to what's going to with Project Chanology, except a more comical and small scale there.

It's a lot easier to unify people to strike against a common enemy than it is to agree on something proactive. Using that susceptible mind-set of temporary trust, he wrapped them around his fingers and had a good old time.

You'd get less time for murder (sometimes). Seems a bit of a harsh sentencing.

    This is a good point.

Gonzalez saw an opportunity and he ran with it. I also think a big part of it was the thrill of the game. He couldn't stop himself and he didn't have an exit strategy. Those were the flies in his ointment.

People that drop prices devalue their product. I have more volume then my competitors at twice their price. That's because if you get it from me it's not a half ass product, ever. They will sometimes have even the same as me, but people trust me more. I think good business is about consistency. I think consistency is all about how well your reputation is and how you maintain your image. You will never get the right spots, or the right products if people think you are a coward, snitch, untrustworthy in general.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I dont know why you would print rubbish even once. <)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I reward the reliable ones, and they stay reliable. They move up a rung. On the other end of the spectrum, the chaff gets culled, and they lose my favor. Spot on about consistency. Hell, my regulars don't even blink when I tell them they'll be paying more. They know better.

I think another important part of business is the role of advancement. If your employees don't think they can move up, or if they don't want to, they'll do just enough work to get their cut and no more. I don't want slackers. Slackers can be enticed by greener pastures. But show off your lieutenants as examples of what good work will get them, and every one of them will hop to.

Some people can't be won that way, but it's more profitable to just be rid of them, anyway.

You want to use that as a logical choice that you decide. Not neccessarily that they are the most skilled, but the one who can see they have more to lose going against you and/or sees eye to eye with your goals and accepts your leadership as being the one to get them there.
I give people bonuses. It's the best way. What seems like a little of money to you is a lot to them. Just throw them a extra hundred when they sell so many units. Make it a number they have not hit, but one that is attainable in your experience. Once they hit that number the bonus will be pennies to the amount you make every week consistently. As for knowledge... I'm more than a little paranoid, truth be told, so that's less of a problem. I put people through a lot of hell before they move up in any significant way, but things are arranged in such a way that there are a number of less significant advancement opportunities.

Make it seem like what you are outside is a facade and the real you is when you are with them. Everyone can have a piece but nobody ever knows what the other is holding. If someone ever breaches that confidence you know who's untrustworthy and can know ahead of time that they need to be watched. There's no one rule to staying in the game. They told me about this nigger patrick at school and how he was talking to one of their girlfriends. They said they had enough of these people in their school, so we needed to take action.
The next day we beat patrick into a coma and I felt ashamed. How did I let myself become so pathetic as to just be a blind follower. The kid paid a price so I could be cool, but all I felt was uncool.

  113. On a lighter note, robot spammers have also hit SociopathWorld, if my RSS reader is to be believed.

    With such effective pitches as:

    "telecharger poker en ligne gratuit
    Poker gratis online"

    and

    "Jouer poker en ligne gratuit
    jugar poker gratis online"

    ReplyDelete
  117. agree with a lot of that but...

"Make it seem like what you are outside is a facade and the real you is when you are with them."

sounds a little fake and forced and planned... not flexible

maybe just become what need be... not to fool them (for some purpose?)... but to communicate with them in a less stressful way that is effective on the fly

    ReplyDelete
  118. This seems relevant.

I'd daresay UKan would look fetching in a dress.

    ReplyDelete

It's the schizophrenic Anon's that are a problem. What they post only makes sense in their own minds.
